Description
Shūsaku Hōjō serves as a judicial civilian officer at the military court in Kure. Drafted into the navy as a judicial soldier in 1945 during World War II's final stages, his duties extend beyond the war's end, requiring him to oversee final legal matters concerning naval demolition in Otake City. This obligation delays his return to Kure for several months.
Born and raised in the major naval port city of Kure, he first meets Suzu Urano as a child during an incident in Hiroshima's commercial district in December 1933. This childhood encounter leaves a lasting impression, leading him years later to seek marriage with Suzu when she turns 18. Their arranged marriage takes place in February 1944, after which Suzu moves to Kure to live with him and his family.
Earnest and quiet, Shūsaku possesses a reserved but dependable demeanor. He demonstrates care for Suzu, respecting her artistic talents and supporting her through wartime hardships. His relationship faces strain due to a past romantic involvement with Rin Shiraki, a courtesan in Kure’s red-light district, which causes Suzu distress upon discovery. Despite this, he remains committed to Suzu, reuniting with her in Hiroshima’s devastated landscape after the atomic bombing.
Following the war, he secures new employment and joins efforts with Suzu to adopt an orphaned girl found in Hiroshima. They return to Kure to rebuild their lives. His interactions with family members, including his parents Entarō and San and sister Keiko, reflect his role as a stabilizing figure within the household.
