Description
Neko-Musume, also known as Cat Girl or Catchick, is a cat hanyō, a half-yōkai residing in GeGeGe Forest. One year older than Kitarō, she stands 136cm tall and weighs 29kg, communicating in Japanese and cat language.

Her visual design evolved across adaptations. Early anime featured her in a long-sleeve white blouse, pink suspender dress, pink shoes, and a pink bow with a bowl-cut hairstyle. The second anime shifted to a red one-piece dress with yellow polka dots. Later series rendered her more human and feminine: the fifth emphasized cuteness with large yellow eyes and brownish-orange hair, while the sixth depicted a taller, mature figure with purple hair in a bun, delicate features, and red stiletto heels, occasionally adding sheer pantyhose from episode 27. Her pink bow often casts cat-ear shadows, revealing her bake-neko nature; the sixth anime gave her natural pointed ears that droop during extreme sadness.

Appearing human normally, she transforms when angered, hungry, or near fish or rats: her eyes turn gold and feline, fangs appear, and her face gains cat-like traits. The sixth anime showed greater control, allowing a grotesque battle form with a fanged mouth, flat nose, and heightened aggression. In this instinct-driven state, she moves on all fours, howls, and attacks with razor claws, yet distinguishes allies from foes, possessing cat-like reflexes.

A member of the Kitarō Family, she first met Kitarō chasing Nezumi-Otoko for stealing fish, recognizing him from Sunakake-Babaa’s tales. Manga history places her debut in the 1967 story "Nezumi-Otoko and Neko-Musume," initially lacking her signature ribbon. An early similar character, Nekoko, was human with a transformation disease. By the 1980s, the ribboned anime design entered manga, establishing her attendance at the same yōkai primary school as Kitarō. "Zoku GeGeGe no Kitarō" saw her at Bizarre Women's University studying Strange Studies, developing an arrogant personality and working part-time to support Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji. "Shin GeGeGe no Kitarō" presented her as a student at Under the Grave High School, suggesting possible alternate versions. Predecessors include Midori (a human cursed into bake-neko form) and Neko (a separate character with similar, less controlled abilities).

She harbors consistent romantic feelings for Kitarō, who views her platonically. She displays intense animosity towards Nezumi-Otoko, often punishing his misdeeds with scratches, making him fear her, though they have collaborated in battle. She exhibits prejudice against his half-human nature, once calling him "tainted with human blood" and "not a real yōkai," drawing Nurikabe’s rebuke. Her favorite foods are fish, bonito flakes, and rats, with catnip mochi as her specialty dish.

Character development reflects evolving roles and designs. Early anime (series 2–4) included fan service elements like panty shots, later eliminated due to changing standards. The fifth anime highlighted her interest in human fashion with varied outfits. The sixth series emphasized her physical maturation and combat prowess, aligning with an "Adaptational Badass" trope where her battle capabilities rival Kitarō's. Original manga trivia notes her residence near a Chōfu ramen shop and recognition within cat yōkai lore alongside Neko-Mata and Neko-Sennin. Kodansha's 2002 bilingual comics localized her name as "Cat Chick."
