Description
Kosho Shinogi, a Japanese karate practitioner known as the "Cord-Cutter," earned his moniker through a signature technique: severing nerves, blood vessels, tendons, and lymph ducts with precise strikes. This ability originates from his mastery of Himokiri Karate, later refined into Shinogi-ryuu Karate. His hands function like blades, capable of disabling opponents' body functions—such as inducing limb paralysis or blindness—though executing these techniques demands several seconds of concentrated effort per cord.

Born into a martial arts family, he is the younger brother of renowned medical expert Kureha Shinogi. During childhood, Kureha frequently protected him, completing his homework and defending him against bullies. This dynamic fostered Kosho's profound sense of inferiority and a lifelong drive to surpass his brother. Driven by this rivalry, he trained rigorously under an unnamed master. This master eventually retired, designating Kosho as his successor and performing a symbolic ritual: severing his own two fingers—representing the source of Himokiri Karate's power—and gifting them to Kosho. Physically, Kosho possesses a lean, moderately muscular frame, standing 177 cm (5'10") with hair color varying between brown and red across adaptations. He typically wears a dark purple karate gi, switching to a blue tracksuit during later battles. Visible facial scars mark an injury sustained from an explosive device in combat.

His early fighting career was marked by overconfidence, fueled by opponents' fear of his cord-cutting techniques. At the Tokyo Dome's underground arena, he blinded professional wrestler Kouhei Kuzumi for a minor provocation. This arrogance faded after a decisive loss to Baki Hanma. Baki chose a knockout victory instead of breaking Kosho's arm, explaining a broken arm would have triggered unstoppable retaliatory kicks. The defeat fostered mutual respect; Kosho urged Baki to "never lose" future battles and marked the start of Kosho's humility and an ongoing rivalry-friendship.

His tense relationship with Kureha reached a climax when they were pitted against each other in the Maximum Tournament, exacerbating Kosho's childhood insecurities. Mid-fight, he suffered a nervous breakdown, regressing into tearful terror. Kureha forfeited out of compassion, declaring Kosho the winner. Kosho acknowledged he could never unleash his full techniques against family, underscoring their unresolved emotional bond. In a later unauthorized confrontation with death row inmate Hector Doyle, Kosho dominated until Doyle detonated a concealed explosive. Severely burned, he recovered under Kureha's medical care, reinforcing his vulnerability against unconventional tactics.

Across all media, his character evolves from ruthless fighter to a more measured martial artist, though he consistently struggles against top-tier opponents. His lethal techniques often result in losses that position him as a benchmark for others' growth. Despite setbacks, he maintains a strict code of honor and traditionalist values, exemplified by his willingness to sacrifice his hand in battle to preserve his karate's integrity.
