Description
Athena Glory is a prima undine, a professional gondolier, who works for the Orange Planet company on the water-covered planet of Aqua. She is widely recognized as one of the Three Water Fairies, a trio of the most skilled and celebrated undines of her generation, standing alongside Alicia Florence and Akira E. Ferrari. Her own appellation, or title, is Seiren, which means Heavenly Voice, a name that directly points to her most renowned talent.
Born on December 24th on Aqua, Athena is 21 years old at the start of the story and has a height of 170 centimeters. She has a dark complexion, short lavender hair that often features a distinctive ahoge (a single stray lock of hair), and turquoise eyes. While her official work number, displayed on her gondola, is 36, a number she retains to remember her beginnings, her status as the ace of Orange Planet is unquestioned.
In terms of personality, Athena presents a striking contrast between her professional excellence and her personal demeanor. On the water, she is graceful and highly capable, but in everyday life, she is known for being profoundly absent-minded and clumsy. A commonly cited example from the anime shows her forgetting to duck while rowing under a low bridge. She is generally quiet and reserved, speaking little, but her words, when they come, are often thoughtful and meaningful. She possesses a unique and somewhat startling laugh that can sound like an angry shout, which belies her gentle nature. She also seems to struggle with low energy in the mornings, possibly due to low blood pressure, a quirk her junior has learned to navigate.
Her primary role in the narrative is as the senior mentor to Alice Carroll, a young and prodigiously talented trainee who is also her roommate at the Orange Planet dormitory. Despite her own airheaded tendencies, Athena is deeply devoted to Alice's growth and well-being. She provides quiet support, sage advice, and gentle encouragement, especially when Alice faces self-doubt or trouble. This caring mentorship is her central motivation, as she genuinely wishes to see her apprentice succeed and find happiness.
Athena shares a deep and long-standing bond with the other two Water Fairies, Alicia and Akira. The three trained together when they were all apprentices, participating in joint practice sessions much like the main characters do later. This shared history creates a foundation of mutual respect and friendship among them. Her relationship with Alice is the most closely depicted, showcasing her patience and ability to connect with a junior who, due to her exceptional skills, often feels isolated.
While her rowing and customer service skills are excellent, her most notable and celebrated ability is her singing. Her voice is exceptionally beautiful, and she uses it to entertain customers during gondola cruises by singing canzone, traditional boating songs often performed in Esperanto. Her singing is so powerful that it can calm troubled waters or help Alice out of difficult situations. In later installments of the series, Athena’s talent leads her to a new path, as she steps back from active undine work to pursue a professional career as an opera singer.
