TV-Series
Description
Small Kyubey is a distinct entity resembling a smaller, younger version of the standard Kyubey, existing solely within Kamihama City. Its appearance features white fur, four ears blending cat-like and rabbit-like traits, red eyes, and a hot pink egg-shaped oval on its back adorned with pink-white fading patterns and red ovals at the base of its long ears. Unlike its standard counterpart, Small Kyubey lacks verbal speech, conveying meaning solely through singing, often eerie or off-key lullabies.
Iroha Tamaki first encounters this entity within a Witch's labyrinth in Kamihama. Physical contact with Small Kyubey triggers Iroha's lost memory of her wish: to cure her younger sister Ui Tamaki's illness. Small Kyubey maintains a consistent link to Ui, later revealed to be Ui herself. Ui's physical form was erased from existence due to events involving Iroha's wish and the Magius's experiments, causing her soul, overwhelmed by negative energy, to manifest within a past Kyubey body, becoming Small Kyubey.
Small Kyubey exhibits unique behavioral patterns, actively assisting magical girls—particularly Iroha and her allies. It guides them through labyrinths, identifies weak points of enemies like Witches and Uwasa, and disrupts supernatural threats with its singing. It frequently appears in rumor or Uwasa-linked areas, such as the Chain Witch's labyrinth and the Seance Shrine, providing tactical support during battles. After these encounters, it typically vanishes, often fleeing once the Uwasa is defeated. Its abilities include inducing distress in Witches through song and navigating labyrinthine spaces undetected.
Small Kyubey shares a profound connection with Iroha, acting as a catalyst for her quest to uncover Ui's fate. It also interacts with Nemu Hiiragi, one of Ui's former hospital friends and a Magius co-founder, who recognizes its true identity and protects it. This relationship highlights Ui's lingering opposition to the Magius's plans despite her transformed state.
As the story unfolds, Small Kyubey's role evolves from a mysterious guide to a core element in the conflict against the Magius. Its identity as Ui is confirmed during the climax of the Magius arc when Iroha separates Ui's consciousness from the Small Kyubey form, restoring her to human form. Following this resolution, Small Kyubey ceases to exist as a distinct entity, with Ui rejoining Iroha and integrating into daily life at Mikazuki Villa.
