Description
Hajime Nagumo originated as an average Japanese high school student, characterized by black hair, brown eyes, and a slim build. His laid-back, kind, and gentle nature masked a quiet bravery. He lived by a "Hobbies First" motto, prioritizing personal interests such as video games and manga over academics, driven by plans to join his father's gaming company. He endured bullying with resilience, remaining calm during crises like a Behemoth attack while others froze.
Summoned to the fantasy world Tortus alongside his class, Hajime received the commonplace Synergist job class, granting only basic alchemical transmutation. Ostracized by classmates for this perceived weakness, his ordeal deepened when a classmate betrayed him during a Great Orcus Labyrinth expedition, abandoning him in the abyss. Facing starvation, monstrous attacks, and betrayal, his sanity fractured. To survive, he consumed monster meat, triggering bodily mutation. Drinking regenerative Ambrosia further altered him: his hair turned white, his eyes crimson red, and crimson vein-like markings appeared. He lost his left arm to a Claw Bear and later his right eye fighting a Hydra, replacing them with a prosthetic arm and the magical Demon Eye artifact. His height increased by 10 cm, and he developed a more muscular physique. He adopted a distinctive black coat with crimson linings, a gray vest, and armed boots.
Post-transformation, Hajime abandoned kindness for ruthless pragmatism. His sole focus became survival and returning to Japan, discarding concern for Tortus or former classmates. He demonstrated willingness to kill anyone obstructing his goal, including former classmates like Shimizu and Hiyama. His demeanor earned him epithets like "Predator" for smiling amidst danger and "God Slaying Demon King" for defying the false deity Ehit. He emphasized self-reliance, refusing to solve others' problems or share his advanced weaponry, distrusting Ehit's influence over the world's inhabitants. This ruthlessness extended to threatening allies, such as promising death to Chase for attempting to steal his firearm, Donner.
Beneath this exterior, Hajime retained loyalty for trusted individuals. His first companion, the vampire Yue, became his equal partner and lover; their bond preserved fragments of his former empathy. He later formed bonds with Shea Haulia, Tio Klarus, Kaori Shirasaki, and Shizuku Yaegashi, viewing these relationships as vital anchors against complete cruelty. He fiercely protected them and trained allies like the Haulia rabbitmen towards self-sufficiency, embodying his belief that true strength stems from resolve and mutual support, not mere power.
To return home, Hajime conquered labyrinths seeking ancient magics. He rejected the traditional hero role, openly criticizing classmates like Kouki Amanogawa for naïve idealism. Discovering Ehit's manipulation of Tortus, he focused on defeating the god solely to eliminate a threat to his own objectives, employing brutally efficient methods like massacring Ehit's apostles and followers. After Ehit's defeat, he used metamorphosis magic to revert his hair and eye color to their original states and disguised his prosthetics. He returned to Japan with his companions, continuing to protect them with reduced brutality compared to his actions in Tortus.
