Description
Professor Saotome is the primary antagonist. Originally the foremost Getter Ray researcher and creator of the space exploration Getter Robo, he fathered Michiru, Genki, and the artificial human Go. His descent into villainy started upon discovering the parasitic Invaders, which infected his daughter Michiru during a Getter Robo test. His own subsequent infection led to mental corruption. After Michiru's death, which he blamed on Getter pilots Ryoma Nagare and Hayato Jin, vengeance consumed him. Hayato assassinated him to halt his interference, framing Ryoma for the murder. The Invaders later resurrected his corpse as a controlled puppet, amplifying both his hatred and capabilities; his appearance featured a long mustache and an Invader-infested right eye, usually concealed by his hair.
His abilities focused on designing and controlling Getter machines. As an Invader host, he piloted the bio-organic Shin Dragon (Metal Beast Dragon), whose combat prowess surpassed standard Getter models. He engineered Invader countermeasures, including Shin Getter Robo and the artificial human Go, intended as Shin Dragon's pilot. Despite his corruption, his strategic intellect allowed him to orchestrate global threats.
Thirteen years before the main events, he initiated "Armageddon" by drawing a United Nations nuclear strike onto Shin Dragon. The resulting Getter Ray explosion eradicated 99% of humanity, enabling the Invader infestation of Earth. Later, reactivating Shin Dragon with Invader-controlled scientists Stinger and Cowen, he aimed to collide Jupiter's moon Ganymede with Earth. During the final battle against the Getter Team, he deployed psychological warfare, conjuring illusions of Michiru and Musashi Tomoe's deaths. As Shin Dragon was destroyed, he briefly regained lucidity, expressing gratitude to the Getter Team before perishing.
His legacy involved manipulating his younger daughter Genki Saotome's fate. After witnessing Michiru's death and his assassination, trauma-induced amnesia led Benkei Kuruma to conceal her identity as "Kei Kuruma." Kei later piloted Shin Getter-2 against him. His artificial son Go, designed to control Shin Dragon, ultimately defected to protect Kei and oppose the Invaders.
