Description
Julius Amidonia, later known as Julius Lastania, is the son of the late Gaius Amidonia and the older brother of Roroa Amidonia. He is the exiled and unofficial ruler of the Principality of Amidonia before its eventual annexation by the Kingdom of Elfrieden, which later becomes the Kingdom of Friedonia. As a young man with a handsome face, his eyes are often described as having a cold glint that chills those who meet his gaze.
Initially, Julius is portrayed as a vain and egotistical individual who holds grand dreams of conquest. Though not as hot-headed or reckless as his father, he shares the same militaristic ideals and follows a military-first outlook that prioritizes martial dominance over the welfare of his citizens. This mindset reveals his severe lack of understanding when it comes to governance, domestic issues, and the needs of his own people, who have suffered from food shortages and economic struggles for generations due to Amidonia's mountainous terrain and limited agriculture.
Julius's primary motivation in the early story is to reclaim the fertile territories that Amidonia lost to the Elfrieden Kingdom half a century earlier, believing it is necessary to solve his country's chronic food shortages. He launches an invasion of Elfrieden during a period of civil unrest, a conflict that comes to be known as the One Week War. This campaign proves disastrous. The Amidonian army suffers massive casualties and is forced to conscript peasants. During the conflict, Julius's father, Gaius, dies in a suicidal charge against the protagonist, Kazuya Souma. Following this defeat and the subsequent occupation of the capital city of Van, Julius becomes the unofficial ruler of a fractured and economically crippled state.
Desperate to recover his capital, Julius appeals to the Gran Chaos Empire to invoke the Mankind Declaration. Although he regains Van through negotiation, the terms are punishing. He is forced to pay enormous war reparations, sees his nation's armory sold off, and must surrender his country's only Jewel Voice Broadcast orb as collateral. His attempts to reassert control after the occupation are counterproductive and oppressive. He destroys bridges and infrastructure built by Elfrieden, cuts off public broadcasts that the people had come to enjoy, and imposes harsh restrictions. Rather than restoring order, these actions deepen public resentment, spark widespread rebellions, and lead to a pro-annexation sentiment among his own citizens, who had experienced better living conditions under the occupation.
Following his exile after Amidonia's annexation by Elfrieden, Julius holds a deep grudge against Kazuya Souma for his defeat and against his sister Roroa for what he perceives as her betrayal by eventually allying with and marrying Souma. He wanders from country to country, feeling lost, before eventually finding his way to the Kingdom of Lastania. There, he joins the military and leads its small forces in defending against monster attacks from the Demon Lord's Domain. His competence and bravery in these battles earn him the admiration and affection of Princess Tia Lastania.
This relationship marks a significant turning point in his development. His attitude becomes more subdued as he reconciles with his past. He marries Tia, adopts her family surname, and formally renounces his claim to the Amidonian throne. He also reconciles with his sister Roroa and Souma, even supporting their union and pressing for an heir to continue the Amidonian bloodline. When a massive wave of monsters threatens the Union, and later when the expansionist forces of Fuuga Haan target Lastania, Julius proves his transformation. He evacuates Tia and their unborn child to Friedonia and engineers a daring escape from the invading army. Ultimately, he pledges himself to Souma's service, becoming an invaluable military advisor and intelligence asset for Friedonia within the Union of Eastern Nations.
Julius is a trained soldier and swordsman capable of leading men on the battlefield, and he demonstrates a capacity for tactical thinking. After his marriage and integration into Friedonia, his role is less about direct combat and more about providing strategic counsel and critical intelligence on emerging continental threats. His story arc is a progression from a shortsighted and prideful warmonger, who failed as a ruler, to a humbled and pragmatic ally who prioritizes the safety of his new family and finds purpose in coalition-building and strategic advisory roles.
