Description
Ludwin Arcs is a supporting character in the anime How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. He serves as the captain of the Royal Guard, also referred to as the Imperial Guard, which oversees the security of the royal capital and the king. A young man of around thirty, he has a handsome appearance with long, straight blonde hair and blue eyes. He comes from a noble family of the Elfrieden Kingdom, but despite his noble status, he lives a frugal and simplistic lifestyle.
Ludwin is intelligent, charismatic, and highly capable both as a warrior and as a commander. His combat skills are considered first-rate, though he is not quite as powerful as Aisha Udgard or Halbert Magna. What sets him apart is his strong strategic sense and his ability to lead troops effectively; in times of crisis, he takes command of the elite forces. He possesses the courage to risk his life even in situations where victory is already assured, and he is also shrewd enough to play the role of a stubborn, rigid loyalist when doing so helps bolster King Souma's authority and public image. This flexibility shows that he is far more perceptive and adaptable than he sometimes lets on.
One of Ludwin’s defining traits is his deep loyalty to those he cares about, especially his childhood friend Jinya Maxwell, a brilliant but eccentric scientist. He has romantic feelings for Jinya and financially supports her research by covering most of her expenses out of his own salary. Because of this, even though he earns a high income as a knight, he often eats the cheapest items on the menu in the palace cafeteria. This side of him makes him a relatable, hardworking figure. Occasionally, the stress of his responsibilities and his frugal lifestyle leads him to engage in harmless, impulsive mischief as an outlet.
In the story, Ludwin is one of the few key personnel who were already serving in the royal court before Souma’s arrival. He becomes a trusted subordinate of the new king and plays an important role in military matters, especially during the conflict known as the One Week War, where he leads the royal guard in battle and demonstrates his prowess. He also takes part in evaluating and assigning roles to talented individuals gathered by Souma; for instance, he personally administers a final test to Aisha to determine her best position. His relationship with other characters is mostly professional, but he shares a sense of camaraderie with fellow knights and soldiers.
Ludwin does not undergo a major personal transformation over the course of the anime, but he consistently shows growth in his trust and respect for Souma’s unconventional methods. He remains a steadfast pillar of the kingdom’s military, balancing his duty as a commander with his personal sacrifices for the sake of those he loves. His notable abilities include exceptional swordsmanship, tactical leadership, and the resolve to carry out dangerous orders without hesitation.
