Description
Hakuya Kwonmin is a recurring character first introduced as one of the five winners of a national talent search held by the newly crowned king, Kazuya Souma. A young man in his early twenties, Hakuya has a pale complexion and a slender, almost frail build that suggests he spends a great deal of time indoors. He has straight, somewhat unkempt black hair that falls to his shoulders, sharp purple eyes, and a demeanor that is almost perpetually cold and calculating, rarely betraying any emotion. He is almost always seen wearing a distinctive black robe, which eventually earns him the nickname of the Black-Robed Prime Minister.
Prior to his employment by the kingdom, Hakuya was a recluse who devoted almost all of his time to reading a wide variety of books and had very little interest in social interaction. He only participated in the talent search at the urging of his uncle and had no real desire to win a government position. When King Kazuya initially offered him a post as a judge, he refused, explaining that his only passion was for reading. However, the King managed to capture his interest by offering him the position of royal librarian, a role that would grant him access to rare and restricted texts not available to the public. This offer successfully brought Hakuya into the royal court, where his extraordinary intellect, legal knowledge, and diplomatic skills quickly became indispensable.
Behind his mask of indifference, Hakuya is exceptionally shrewd, perceptive, and pragmatic. As a firm believer in the King's realist philosophies, he is often the one to devise and execute harsh but necessary policies for the stability and prosperity of the kingdom, embodying the Machiavellian principle that the ends can justify the means. Despite his reputation for being cold and logical, he possesses a gentler side that emerges in more private moments. He finds amusement in subtly teasing his king over the troublesome consequences of his own decisions and frequently vents his frustrations about royal duties to his counterpart in a neighboring empire, Jeanne Euphoria.
Hakuya's primary role in the story is that of the King’s most trusted advisor and right hand. He eventually succeeds the aged Marx as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Friedonia, a position for which his political acumen and flawless memory make him perfectly suited. In this capacity, he is instrumental in formulating and carrying out the kingdom’s key geopolitical strategies. He played a pivotal part in quelling the rebellions of Georg Carmine and Castor Vargas, managing the invasion and occupation of the Principality of Amidonia, and negotiating the secret alliance with the Gran Chaos Empire. He is often the one who translates King Kazuya's modern ideas into practical policies and laws that can be implemented in their fantasy world.
Hakuya’s key relationships are almost entirely defined by his professional and political duties. His bond with King Kazuya is one of deep mutual trust and respect, forming a partnership where the King provides the vision and Hakuya provides the expertise to execute it. He also develops a notable rapport with Jeanne Euphoria, the sister of the Empress of the Gran Chaos Empire. As the primary liaison for the secret alliance between their nations, the two frequently bond over the shared burden of managing their brilliant but troublesome rulers. This relationship eventually deepens considerably. After the fall of the Gran Chaos Empire, Hakuya marries Jeanne, leaving his post in Friedonia to become the Prince Consort of the newly formed Euphoria Kingdom.
His development as a character sees him transition from a bookish, antisocial scholar to one of the most powerful political figures on the continent. While he begins with no ambition beyond the walls of a library, the challenge of statecraft and his loyalty to the King pull him into the center of world events. He becomes more than just an advisor, evolving into a master strategist who is crucial to the nation's survival and expansion. Throughout this transformation, he remains defined by his unparalleled intellect, specifically his eidetic memory, which allows him to recall every law he has ever read, making him a living legal archive and a formidable political operator.
