Description
Appearing in Pokémon Generations episode "The Challenger," Blue defeats the Elite Four—Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance—in consecutive battles, claiming the title of Kanto Champion. His victory is immediately challenged by his longtime rival, Red, entering the Champion's chamber for a final battle, emphasizing Blue's skilled and ambitious nature despite his brief tenure as Champion.

Originating in the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue (Green in Japan), Blue serves as the player's rival. Grandson of Professor Oak and a childhood acquaintance of the player character Red, he deliberately chooses his first Pokémon from Oak for a type advantage over the player's selection. He frequently challenges the player throughout the games with taunts like "Smell ya later!", displaying a consistently competitive and arrogant demeanor. His progression mirrors the player's, culminating in him defeating the Elite Four first and becoming Champion before being dethroned by the player.

Following this loss, Blue evolves. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, he becomes the Viridian City Gym Leader after Giovanni's disappearance. As Gym Leader, he employs a diverse team without a fixed type specialty, showcasing his adaptability. His personality reflects greater maturity; he gracefully accepts defeat and displays a more respectful attitude, establishing himself as one of Kanto's strongest Gym Leaders.

Blue appears in other media. The Pokémon Origins miniseries portrays his confident and strategically aggressive pursuit of the Championship over completing the Pokédex, centering on his rivalry with Red and mirroring their final League battle. The Pokémon Adventures manga genderswaps the character, revealing she was kidnapped by Masked Ice (Pryce) at age five and held captive with Silver. Developing a protective relationship with Silver and surviving by theft, she escapes to become a resourceful yet secretive Trainer, concealing emotional struggles and past trauma. Reuniting with her parents years later, their relationship remains strained due to her independence and unresolved experiences; she operates behind a cheerful façade while grappling internally with isolation and responsibility.

Later game appearances include Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, where he can be challenged at the Battle Tree alongside Red. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, he battles the player at Silph Co. and later serves as Viridian City Gym Leader. His team composition varies across appearances, often including Pokémon like Pidgeot, Alakazam, Exeggutor, Rhydon, Gyarados, and Arcanine.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game features him on the Supporter card "Blue’s Tactics," enabling players to draw cards until holding eight, reflecting his strategic prowess. He also appears in Pokémon Masters EX as a sync pair with Pidgeot.
