Description
Barry is a prominent character in the Sinnoh region, serving as a rival to the protagonist Ash Ketchum. He is a young Pokémon Trainer from Twinleaf Town, the same hometown as Ash's traveling companion, Dawn. Barry is the son of Palmer, the powerful Frontier Brain who leads the Sinnoh Battle Frontier's Battle Tower, and he holds his father's strength and status in very high regard, striving to become a trainer of a similar caliber.
In terms of appearance, Barry has distinct yellow hair styled upwards and orange eyes. His outfit consists of a short-sleeved cardigan with orange and white vertical stripes, gray pants, brown boots, and a brown messenger bag. He also wears a long green scarf and an orange Pokétch, a多功能 watch device, on his left arm.
Barry’s personality is his most defining characteristic. He is exceptionally hyperactive and seems to be in a perpetual state of rushing from one place to another. This haste often leads him to collide with people, including Ash, after which he will loudly and comically demand that the other person pay a fine for the inconvenience. He is impatient, impulsive, and prone to boasting about his own skills and the strength of his Pokémon. Despite this, he has a strong sense of justice and is a loyal friend. While he admires the raw power-focused training philosophy of the rival trainer Paul and initially believes that strength is the most important quality in a battle, Barry differs from Paul by showing genuine care, concern, and affection for his own Pokémon, celebrating their efforts and worrying when they are injured or acting strangely.
Barry’s primary motivation is to become a powerful trainer, driven by the goal of matching his father's legendary strength. He seeks to prove himself by collecting Gym Badges and eventually competing in the prestigious Sinnoh League Conference. His journey is also about finding his own path as a trainer, as he initially tries to emulate the harsh methods of Paul but gradually comes to appreciate and adopt a more balanced approach that values the bond between trainer and Pokémon.
Barry’s role in the story is that of a recurring rival and occasional ally to Ash and his friends. He is first introduced rushing out of the Hearthome City Gym, where he collides with Ash. He challenges Ash to a battle and, after seeing Ash’s performance against the Gym Leader Fantina, declares Ash to be his rival. Throughout the Diamond and Pearl series, Barry appears at various points, often to challenge Ash to a battle, train, or get caught up in the schemes of villainous teams like Team Rocket and Team Galactic. He later competes in the Lily of the Valley Conference, the Sinnoh League, where he advances to the third round.
Barry has several key relationships that shape his character. His most significant relationship is his rivalry with Ash, which begins with Barry underestimating him but evolves into mutual respect and friendship. He also greatly admires Paul, viewing him as a model of a strong trainer; however, their one official battle at the Sinnoh League ends in a decisive loss for Barry, teaching him a hard lesson about the limitations of pursuing strength alone. Barry shares a friendly, if sometimes exasperated, rapport with Dawn, as they are from the same hometown and have known each other since childhood, though Barry often forgets this fact. His father, Palmer, remains a distant but powerful figure of inspiration for him.
Throughout the series, Barry undergoes notable development. Initially, he is a headstrong and somewhat naïve trainer who believes that power is the ultimate goal. His crushing defeat at the hands of Paul, where he loses without defeating a single one of Paul's Pokémon, serves as a major turning point. This loss forces him to confront his own weaknesses and reassess his training methods. He becomes more humble and begins to understand the value of strategy and trust in his Pokémon, rather than just raw force. By the end of the Sinnoh League, he acknowledges Ash as a superior trainer, a significant admission from someone as boastful as Barry.
Barry’s notable abilities as a trainer are demonstrated through his team of powerful and well-trained Pokémon. His starter Pokémon is an Empoleon, the fully evolved form of Piplup, which serves as his main partner and is exceptionally strong. His team also includes a Staraptor, a Roserade, a Heracross which he caught by slathering honey on a tree, and later, for the Sinnoh League, he adds a Skarmory and a Hitmonlee. While his battle style often leans towards direct, powerful attacks, he is capable of employing clever strategies, such as having his Skarmory set up Spikes on the battlefield to damage incoming opposing Pokémon. His impatience can sometimes be a weakness, but his determination and the sheer power of his Pokémon make him a formidable opponent.
