Description
Ren Suzugamori begins as a timid youth, shaped by an abusive father's high expectations. He finds refuge in a card shop, learning Vanguard. Awakening PSYqualia grants him the power to predict battle outcomes and hear his cards' voices, triggering a drastic personality shift. This power breeds obsession with winning and control, fueling sadistic behavior during fights where he taunts opponents and derives pleasure from their distress. He forms Team Asteroid (later Foo Fighters), adopting a motto of absolute victory.

His appearance evolves: early seasons feature a black trench coat, red or black shirt, black choker, and dark red fight glove; later arcs show him in a school uniform with a ponytail; the G series depicts him with longer, messier hair. His abilities center on PSYqualia, enabling him to foresee draws and manipulate battle flow, intimidating opponents. His mastery allows temporary resistance to external control even as a "PSYqualia Zombie." He primarily uses Shadow Paladin decks featuring units like Blaster Dark and Phantom Blaster Overlord, though he experiments with Gold Paladins and Dark Irregulars in tournaments.

Ren idolized Toshiki Kai, seeking to equal his strength. Repeated losses to Kai, coupled with growing PSYqualia addiction, strain their relationship into a bitter rivalry. As leader of Team Foo Fighter AL4, he dominates the national championship until defeated by Aichi Sendou, who severs his PSYqualia connection. This loss reverts him to his original cheerful and friendly personality, prone to pranks and ghost stories, though he retains intensity during card fights. Post-recovery, he rejoins tournaments with Team New AL4 in the Asia Circuit, briefly regaining PSYqualia during a match but showing diminished obsession. Later, he attends Fukuhara High School as Vanguard Club captain, adopting a more relaxed leadership style.

In the *Vanguard -IF-* spin-off, he appears as "Mask the Dark," a humorous homage to magical-girl tropes with exaggerated shoulder pads, aiding allies under this alias. His surname, Suzugamori, references historical execution grounds, reflecting themes of darkness. His development contrasts initial ruthlessness with a redeemed self who values friendships and maintains a balance between light and darkness.
