Description
Bondrewd, the Sovereign of Dawn or Bondrewd the Novel, operates from the Ido Front research base deep within the Abyss's fifth layer. His past involves overseas criminal activities that earned him a bounty, though the specific crimes remain unknown. Evading capture, he became a delver, funding his research illegally through the sale of artifacts, experimental drugs, and confidential information. Bounty hunters pursuing him consistently vanished, fueling widespread fear. Approximately a decade before the main events, he established Ido Front, achieving significant breakthroughs: creating previously impassable routes, securing a permanent deep Abyss base, developing novel drugs, and discovering methods to counteract the Abyss's curse during ascent. His unethical experiments utilized children to study the curse, with Nanachi and Mitty as subjects. These resulted in Nanachi gaining a rabbit-like blessing and Mitty becoming an immortal, deformed entity. Bondrewd later invented cartridges – devices containing children reduced to essential organs – that transfer the curse's effects to the child during ascents, sparing the user. His consciousness transfers between bodies using the Zoaholic relic, a special-grade artifact implanting his mind into followers called Umbra Hands. Prolonged Zoaholic use causes mental dispersion in non-resistant individuals, granting him effective immortality while gradually altering his consciousness into something non-human. His white whistle, fashioned from his original body's remains, resembles clasped hands and activates by rubbing.
He adopted Prushka after she survived a fifth-layer transportation accident, raising her as his daughter despite her physical and psychological trauma from the curse. He gifted her a Meinastilim pet named Meinya to aid her recovery, celebrating the adoption day as her birthday. Bondrewd demonstrated genuine care for her well-being. However, during a confrontation with Reg, Riko, and Nanachi, he processed Prushka into a cartridge. This act granted him the Abyss's blessing, transforming his body similarly to Nanachi's. Prushka's love during the process allowed her remains to form Riko's white whistle. Bondrewd remembers the names, ambitions, and personal histories of all children sacrificed in his experiments, expressing gratitude for their contributions. His polite, calm demeanor contrasts sharply with his actions; he shows no hostility during combat, instead praising opponents who outmaneuver him. He values knowledge above ethics, believing his research prepares for the Abyss's 2000-year cycle. Key artifacts and abilities include Sparagmos, an annihilation ray weapon; Shaker, cursed projectiles inducing the Abyss's effects; Ascending to the Morning Star, a targeted plasma beam; and Touching the Moon, elastic tendrils for manipulation. His powered armor, Canopy Unto Dawn, integrates multiple relics and weapons.
When Reg, Riko, and Nanachi arrived at Ido Front, Bondrewd welcomed them but obstructed their descent, noting Riko lacked a usable white whistle. He later ordered Reg's dissection for study, prompting their escape and triggering confrontations. The trio employed strategic traps, luring him into a Stingerhead nest and crushing his body with a boulder after exposing him to the sixth layer's curse. Each physical destruction initiated his transfer to another Umbra Hand body. In the final battle, an overcharged Reg damaged Ido Front, leading to a showdown where Bondrewd revealed Prushka's cartridge form. After his defeat, he acknowledged the trio's strength, permitted their descent into the sixth layer, and provided supplies without further interference. He shifted his aspiration to their successful exploration, viewing their progress as the next wonder.
