Gorōta Kumashima, nicknamed "Kuma" (Bear), is a recurring character and one of protagonist Nate Adams' closest friends. He attends Springdale Elementary alongside classmates Nate, Eddie Archer, and Katie Forester. Physically robust, he has distinctive dark rings around his eyes, a black pointy hairstyle, and typically wears a plaster on his left cheek. His standard outfit—a blue varsity jacket with white sleeves over a white shirt featuring a triangular design, brown shorts, and white sneakers—creates a rough, biker-like appearance contrasting with his actual nature.
Despite his intimidating exterior, Kuma exhibits a gentle, sensitive, and somewhat clumsy personality. He is a known glutton, lacks athletic prowess, and displays emotional vulnerability, often bursting into tears. He harbors a pronounced fear of his disciplinarian mother. His younger sister, Bearmie (Bernarda in some regions), lives in America, and his father works as a carpenter, mirroring Nate's father's profession.
Kuma features in significant game storylines. In *Yo-kai Watch*, he enlists Nate to retrieve his parents' lost engagement ring from a pond ("The Ring In The Pond"). Later, in "The Extreme Dare," he is trapped inside an anatomical model by Yo-kai Rattelle after taking one of her ribs, requiring Nate to return the bone. During "Re-Mom-Bear Me," he seeks Nate's aid when his mother, inspirited by Wazzat, forgets dinner; defeating Wazzat restores her memory, leading to her scolding him over a poor test score.
In *Yo-kai Watch 2*, he stars in the "Bear Boy" quest trilogy. "Bear Boy - Origins" sees him aspiring to be a superhero; Nate procures a belt and dull sword, but Mochismo's influence makes him overly strong, causing him to fall into a river during a flight attempt. "The Bear Boy Returns" involves failed training at Springdale Sports Club where Nekidspeed's power makes him too fast, resulting in a collision with his mother. "Ultimate Bear Boy" has him acquiring Glorious Mask merchandise, but Supoor Hero inspires Eddie to clash as "Officer Eddie," culminating in both jumping off his roof. Each quest ends with maternal reprimand, the final noting Eddie also got scolded by his own mother, whom Kuma finds scarier.
The anime and films maintain his role in the friend group. The third film (*The Great Adventure of the Flying Whale & the Double World, Nyan!*) includes live-action segments where adult actor Yu Sawabe portrays him, prompting an in-universe note about his resemblance to a 30-year-old man. One scene depicts him obtaining a rare Emperor Krills toy, negotiating its sale with Eddie while Nate observes. A later season (SS044) shows Nate and Katie mentioning him and Eddie while seeking advice, though his current Springdale residence is unconfirmed.
Notable trivia includes his crush on classmate Lulu, revealed when Katie is inspirited by Espy. Among Nate's core friends, he is inspirited by Yo-kai the least frequently. His nickname "Bear" and surname "Bernstein" (localized as "Barbosa" in Portuguese) reference *The Berenstain Bears*.
