Description
Hanako Koyanagi is a 27-year-old office worker who shares a workplace with her fellow otaku colleagues Narumi Momose and Hirotaka Nifuji. She stands at 167cm tall and has a birthday on August 28. Hanako has an attractive and fair-skinned appearance with shoulder-length dark green hair, typically tied up in a small ponytail, and thin purple eyes. At work, she wears a professional ensemble including a gray blazer and a mint green blouse, often accessorized with oval-shaped glasses and light green nail polish. Her physical figure, including her large bust, is noted as part of her charm and contributes to her confident presence.

Hanako's personality contrasts between her professional exterior and her more spirited private self. At work, she is generally professional, strict, and hardworking, often admired by her male co-workers. However, beneath this cool surface, she is described by her partner Tarō Kabakura as short-tempered, panicky, and very drawn to perverted jokes. She is lively, outgoing, and not afraid to speak her mind, sometimes coming across as rough around the edges. Hanako has a strong independent streak and has no problem putting her boyfriend in his place, leading to frequent, playful arguments between them that are a source of comedy. Despite her tough exterior, she experiences vulnerability and insecurity, particularly worrying that Kabakura might be merely settling for her because she is not his usual type. On one occasion, these insecurities surfaced tearfully when she had been drinking. Although she enjoys alcohol, her tolerance is low, which often leads to embarrassing or troublesome situations.

Hanako's journey into otaku culture began during her high school years. Initially, she did not understand the appeal of manga and anime. This changed when she met Tarō Kabakura, an enthusiastic otaku who was one year her senior and the captain of the boys' volleyball team. Hanako herself was the captain of the girls' volleyball team as only a second-year due to a lack of members, and she and Kabakura frequently clashed over who got to use the court. One night, while she was practicing her serves, Kabakura noticed her and taught her how to perform a jump serve properly, leaving her amazed. Through his passionate explanations about his hobbies, she gradually became interested in the otaku lifestyle herself. After Kabakura graduated from high school, they began dating, though both jokingly claim the other confessed first. By her final year of high school, Hanako had begun taking cosplay seriously.

In her role within the story, Hanako serves as both a close friend to Narumi and a counterpart in the series' exploration of adult otaku relationships. She forms a close friendship with Narumi Momose, whom she affectionately calls Naru, and the two share a bond as fellow fujoshi who enjoy Boys' Love manga and cosplay. However, their favorite BL pairings are usually opposites, leading to fun, friendly debates between them. Hanako also has a friendly relationship with Hirotaka Nifuji; the group frequently goes for drinks together, and she has offered him advice on occasion, noting that he has become more like a human and gotten cuter over time. Her relationship with Tarō Kabakura is central to both her character and the series. They are a veteran couple who have been together for about a decade, and their dynamic is characterized by constant, playful bickering that nonetheless reveals underlying affection. Kabakura describes her as easily influenced, and she can become jealous over his waifus or annoyed when he mentions his fatherly love for Narumi. Despite their arguments, they clearly care for each other deeply. Their ongoing relationship provides a contrast to the newer, more tentative romance between Narumi and Hirotaka.

Hanako's most notable ability is her skill in cosplay, where she has gained significant popularity, particularly for her portrayals of male characters or bishounen. Her cosplay is of such high quality that it draws admiration from peers, and she is described as being so convincing in male roles that others comment she would make a great man. She is passionate about this hobby, regularly buying related magazines and performing at conventions. Beyond cosplay, she also has interests in acting, theater, and anime, all of which contribute to her performative talents.

Over the course of the story, Hanako's relationship with Kabakura continues to develop. They eventually get married, at which point her legal surname becomes Kabakura. At their wedding, she amazed the guests by wearing an impressive cosplay outfit. The fact that they continue to work at the same company after marriage sometimes leads to humorous confusion when colleagues call them by their last names. Later in the manga series, Hanako reveals she is pregnant, leading to an emotional reaction from Kabakura, and the author later depicts her holding her daughter as they cosplay together.
