Washū Hakubi exists across multiple continuities with distinct backgrounds.
In the primary OVA continuity, Washū is one of three Chōshin goddesses who created the multiverse. To investigate a higher power, she sealed her divine consciousness into three gemstones and descended as a mortal. An ancient precursor civilization captured and imprisoned her for over 100 million years. After escaping, she erased her memories and regressed to infancy. Found as an amnesiac three-year-old at a Kanamitsu monastery with only the gems, she later became the youngest student accepted into the Jurai Imperial Academy's Department of Philosophy. She eventually defected with research partner Naja Akara to found the independent Galaxy Academy.
Thousands of years prior, Washū married Mikamo Kuramitsu and bore a son, Mikumo. Political strife and her "lower status" led Mikamo to take Mikumo away, causing Washū profound grief. She subsequently altered her form to that of an adolescent girl, preferring "Little Washū." Attempts to create replacement children using the powerful Masu species failed tragically, leaving the massive crater "Washū's Pore" at the Academy. Later, she created the space pirate Ryoko using Masu biology and her own ova, making Ryoko her biological daughter. She co-created Ryoko's living ship, Ryo-Ohki, with assistant Kagato. Kagato betrayed her, imprisoning her for 5,000 years within her battleship, Soja, until Mihoshi freed her during a battle.
After Kagato's defeat, Washū resided in the Masaki household on Earth, establishing an interdimensional lab accessible via a closet. Her research centered on Tenchi Masaki, fascinated by his ability to generate Light Hawk Wings. She developed a deep bond with him, risking her life for his protection. A telepathic link formed with Ryoko during imprisonment means she shares Ryoko's feelings for Tenchi. She actively mentors Ryoko, using harsh methods to counter emotional repression from Kagato's brainwashing. Washū is an ancestor of Mihoshi Kuramitsu, a connection seemingly only she knows. She later resumed her goddess form temporarily to save Tenchi from a universe-threatening crisis but chose to remain with him as a human.
In spin-offs like *Tenchi Muyo! GXP*, Washū occasionally visits the Galaxy Academy disguised to sell Earth goods. She also created Fuku, Ryo-Ohki's younger sister. In *War on Geminar*, she hypnotized Tenchi's half-brother Kenshi Masaki to protect the family's secret origins; Kenshi refers to her as "that mad scientist" and considers her a sister.
In the alternate *Tenchi Universe* continuity, Washū is a non-divine scientist banished from the Universal Science Academy for creating planet-destroying weapons. Imprisoned in a crystal capsule on Earth for 700 years, she was freed during a conflict involving Ryoko and Ayeka. She aided Tenchi in defeating Kagato by disabling the Jurai fleet with a computer virus. Though briefly made honorary president of the Science Academy, she was expelled for developing a universe-destroying weapon and returned to Earth.
In *Tenchi in Tokyo*, she is a renegade scientist who helped Ryoko steal the Jurai Light Stone, fleeing to Earth after tracking down an energy signal from Tenchi's necklace.
