Airi Masaki, born Airi Magma, originates from the theocratic empire of Airai, a planet renowned for its religious devotion to the "Three Lives" (Choushin goddesses) and advanced technology. Her people harbored deep resentment towards Jurai for its perceived monopolization of the goddess Tsunami. As daughter of Airai's ruling hierarch, Geira Magma, Airi played a pivotal role in her planet's political strategies, notably a plan to infiltrate Jurai's royal family by marrying into House Amaki to ultimately seize control of Tsunami. She met Yosho Masaki Jurai while both attended the Galaxy Academy, she at 15 and he at 12. Despite the age difference, his maturity fostered a connection that softened his austere nature, though he reverted during visits to Jurai. After three years, Airi was recalled to Airai for an arranged marriage advancing her planet's agenda. Defying the scheme on advice from Seto Kamiki Jurai, she spent a final night with Yosho aboard his ship, Funaho, resulting in pregnancy. Her return to Airai, pregnant and revealing the infiltration plot, caused massive scandals. Amidst the turmoil, the serial killer Widow exploited societal fractures, triggering mass suicides, rebellion, and civil war that annihilated Airai's ruling class, including Geira Magma. Airi and her infant daughter Minaho survived under the protection of her great-aunt Keira Magma, a monastic leader, before gaining asylum at the Galaxy Academy. Jurai later recognized Minaho as Yosho's heir, granting both the Masaki surname for protection against surviving Airaian assassins. Airi pursued studies to become a "Philosopher," acquiring advanced abilities to counter remaining threats. Her research involved experimental procedures on Minaho that caused physical scarring; they later reconciled, their relationship evolving into one resembling sisterhood due to similar lifespans. Following the death of Yosho's first wife, Kasumi, and his subsequent disappearance to Earth, he secretly contacted Airi. They reunited, he met Minaho, and they rekindled their romance. Though considered informally married, no official ceremony occurred due to Yosho's concealed existence. They had a second daughter, Kiyone, though Airi and Yosho often lived apart. Kiyone later married Nobuyuki Masaki, becoming Tenchi Masaki's mother, thus making Airi Tenchi's maternal grandmother. Kiyone's early death profoundly impacted the family. Airi rose to head the Galaxy Police's Jurai sector office and chair the Galaxy Police Academy, collaborating closely with figures like Mikami Kuramitsu and Seto. She met Tenchi during OVA 3, vehemently rejecting the title "grandmother"; he addressed her formally as "Airi-san" to avoid offense. She accompanied her granddaughter Tennyo to Earth to introduce Tenchi's fiancée, Noike, displaying playful affection towards Tenchi, noting his resemblance to a young Yosho. In the *GXP* spinoff, she interacted frequently with Seina Yamada. She sexually harassed Seina, driven by an attraction to younger men—a trait potentially rooted in her early relationship with Yosho. She also highly valued Seina for his role in capturing Widow, whom she had hunted since Airai's fall. Her personality blends mischievousness, assertiveness, and maternal complexity. A master of Neo-Academy martial arts, she employs slaps and intimidating stares, demonstrated when subduing Ryoko Hakubi after insults about her age. She relishes practical jokes, co-authoring false accounts of Kiyone's death as a prank. Influenced by Seto, she cultivated cooking skills, often practicing in Galaxy Academy kitchens. Her perverse side included spying on Seina via surveillance devices and initiating inappropriate interactions, behavior tolerated by Yosho. Despite these traits, she demonstrates fierce loyalty and protectiveness, particularly towards family and allies like Seina.
