Description
Dekapan emerged as a supporting character when Kenichiro Takai, assistant to manga artist Fujio Akatsuka, expanded the *Osomatsu-kun* cast. His name, meaning "large pants," originated from a *Shonen Sunday* reader poll. Visually, Dekapan is a short, heavyset, middle-aged man sporting a bald scalp with sparse "Mt. Fuji"-style hairs, crow's feet wrinkles, a thick black mustache, and a single prominent bucktooth. His signature element is oversized striped boxer shorts, worn year-round in most appearances. These boxers function as practical storage for diverse items like tools, money, food, and even live animals such as cats, due to their intentionally wide design rather than supernatural properties. While early stories sometimes featured him fully clothed, he typically appears only in his boxers, switching to black swim shorts underneath for aquatic activities.

Personality-wise, Dekapan often acts as a mild-mannered, eccentric authority figure, contrasting the flamboyant Iyami. Generally good-natured and easygoing, he assumes helpful roles like doctor, policeman, millionaire, or scientist. Yet his characterization is flexible; he can shift into antagonistic parts like mafia boss or cold-hearted villain, especially when narratives require Iyami as a hero. Dekapan displays deep affection for animals, frequently accompanied by a pet cat or dog he calls "Boya" ("boy"). He occasionally equates children with pets, exemplified by one story where he sought to replace a missing dog with Chibita. His speech includes frequent laughter, the interjection "hoe hoe," and sentences ending in "-dasu".

Relationships typically portray Dekapan as solitary, with a 1988 guidebook explicitly stating he has no family. Narrative flexibility allows variations, however; he sometimes serves as a father or uncle figure to characters like Chibita, Hatabō, or Totoko. Rare instances show biological family, such as a school-aged son in *Cat's Eye News* and a toddler named Tarō in the 1988 anime, who resembles him but wears pink-and-white striped boxers. The anime also depicts a wife in two episodes, including one where the couple substitutes for wealthy relatives. His interactions with the Matsuno sextuplets range from supportive to adversarial based on story needs.

Beyond *Osomatsu-kun*, Dekapan appears across numerous Akatsuka works via the "Star System," including *Tensai Bakabon*, *Extraordinary Ataro*, and *Akko-chan's Got a Secret!*. The 1988 anime episode "The Tomboy Princess of Dekapan Castle!" explicitly casts him as Totoko's father, a role rooted in the original manga. His core design and traits remain consistent in these appearances, preserving his visual identity and situational role adaptability.
