Description
Born 26 October 767 UC into lower nobility, Oskar von Reuenthal's father married late to a daughter of the impoverished Count Marbach family. His heterochromia – one blue eye, one brown, despite both parents having blue eyes – fueled accusations of his mother's adultery. She attempted to gouge the mismatched eye during his infancy, stopped only by a servant, then committed suicide. His father succumbed to alcoholism and neglect, fostering Reuenthal's lasting bitterness towards women, a trauma he confided solely to his closest friend, Wolfgang Mittermeyer.
Joining the Imperial Fleet, Reuenthal met Mittermeyer in 789 UC during a bar fight defending ratings against Military Police. Their enduring friendship saw Reuenthal attend Mittermeyer's 792 UC wedding. By 794 UC, as a captain observing Reinhard von Lohengramm's rise, he was promoted to commodore, participating in the Sixth Battle of Iserlohn and helping prevent an Imperial rout. On 2 May 795 UC, as rear admiral, he pledged allegiance to Reinhard to secure Mittermeyer's release, though he occasionally harbored ambitions for greater power.
During the Lippstadt War (796 UC) as vice admiral, Reuenthal served as a principal fleet commander for Reinhard. He engaged Alliance invasion forces, notably pursuing and crippling Admiral Bewcock's 5th Fleet. Post-victory, after Kaiser Friedrich IV's death, he protected Prime Minister Lichtenlade's mansion during a coup. He later fought key battles at Rentenburg Fortress and the siege of Geiersburg Fortress. Following Kircheis's assassination, Reuenthal urged Reinhard past his grief.
After Reinhard's coronation established the Lohengramm Dynasty, Reuenthal became Fleet Admiral and Chief of the High Command Office. In February 800 UC, Heydrich Lang orchestrated treason accusations, exposing Reuenthal's affair with Elfriede von Kohlrausch, niece of the executed Lichtenlade. Elfriede, resentful over her family's downfall, testified Reuenthal expressed ambitions for his unborn son to "aspire higher," implying usurpation. Reuenthal denied the statement and knowledge of the child. Reinhard dismissed the charges but reassigned Reuenthal as Governor-General of Neue Land, granting him half the Imperial Fleet and civil administration of former Alliance territories.
Late 800 UC saw a Terraist-engineered assassination attempt on Reinhard on Uruvasi. Lang spread rumors implicating Reuenthal. Though Reuenthal dispatched Admiral Grillparzer to investigate, Grillparzer concealed Terraist involvement for personal gain. Admiral Lutz's death during the attack and Reuenthal's refusal to compromise his pride prompted his rebellion. He declared intent to liberate Reinhard from Oberstein and Lang's influence, framing his revolt as corrective.
Mittermeyer commanded loyalist forces against Reuenthal. Their fleets clashed at the Second Battle of Rantemario. Grillparzer betrayed Reuenthal, damaging his flagship *Tristan*. A metal shard impaled Reuenthal; he refused surgery to maintain command, orchestrating a retreat despite mortal wounds. Returning to Heinessen, he settled administrative affairs and assassinated Alliance traitor Job Truniht. Elfriede visited; he instructed her to entrust their son Felix to Mittermeyer and offered her the chance to kill him, which she declined. He died 16 December 800 UC while dictating a letter, awaiting Mittermeyer.
Reuenthal possessed strategic brilliance considered second only to Reinhard. His heterochromia earned the nickname "Bewitching Eyes." He demonstrated exceptional administrative skill as Governor-General. His complex psychology, rooted in childhood trauma, manifested as distrust of women and self-destructive pride. His flagship *Tristan* evoked themes of tragedy. Despite rebellion, underlying loyalty to Reinhard persisted. His relationship with Mittermeyer represented his deepest human connection, culminating in entrusting his son's future.
