Description
Iu Shindou is a high school student and a central figure in her class, recognized for her striking appearance with long blonde hair and brown eyes, which has led to opportunities as a fashion model. She is athletic and popular, often perceived as a school idol, yet this exterior masks a past marked by significant adversity. During her childhood, an older friend whom she admired, named Sayuri, died by suicide after being bullied, a loss that deeply affected her. Subsequently, Shindou herself was subjected to relentless bullying by teachers, a situation stemming from conflicts involving her parents and older brothers, including their association with a biker gang. These traumatic experiences drove her to develop a resilient and dependable personality. She consciously adopted the persona of a good kid to gain acceptance and forged strong friendships, coming to believe that friends are a source of strength, a principle that guides her interactions with others.
Shindou is pragmatic and methodical, executing the missions assigned to her in the other world with a strong focus on objectives and teamwork. While she is kind and understanding, her resilience is born from having overcome past hardships, and her determination to survive is fueled not just by a fear of death itself, but by the prospect of losing the relationships and progress she has built. Her popular and attractive exterior is balanced by an inner strength and a pragmatic approach to the lethal challenges she faces alongside her companions.
When transported to a game-like world by a mysterious Game Master, Shindou was initially granted the job of a Wizard with a Wind attribute. However, this job came at a significant cost, drastically diminishing her physical strength and athletic prowess, which negatively affected her real-world abilities such as playing tennis. In early combat, her wind magic was limited to generating gentle breezes, making her largely ineffective in direct confrontation. During a critical mission to defeat a troll, she was consumed and trapped inside the monster, unable to revive until another party member, Yuusuke Yotsuya, freed her. This event proved to be a turning point for the group. As she gained experience and advanced to Rank 10 as a Wizard, she was able to change jobs. Recognizing her potential, the knight Kahvel trained her, allowing Shindou to add Warrior jobs, starting with Sword and later acquiring Spear proficiency. This shift dramatically expanded her combat capabilities, and she proved ingenious in battle, once defeating a troll by channeling wind into its head.
Her role in the story is that of a key party member whose journey involves reconciling the contrasting demands of her normal identity and the brutal reality of the other world. Among the summoned heroes, she suffers some of the most profound personal losses and challenges as a result of this dual existence. Her relationships are central to her development. She forms close bonds with her transported peers, particularly respecting the strategic leadership of Yuusuke Yotsuya. Her dynamic with Yotsuya evolves gradually; she initially sees him as a valuable asset for his warrior-like mentality, but later develops romantic feelings for him, confessing to him during their adventures. After a near-death experience, Yotsuya reciprocates her feelings, and their relationship deepens, leading to her introducing him to her parents. She also briefly dates Haruka Yotsuya, but the relationship ends due to irreconcilable differences in their values, shaped by their contrasting experiences in the peaceful real world and the perilous alternate world. Throughout her journey, Shindou's persistent challenge is to balance her belief in friendship and cooperation against the harsh demands of survival and combat, all while the lingering effects of her initial job continue to weaken her physical abilities even upon returning to the real world.
