Description
Sanya Vladimirovna Litvyak, nicknamed Sanya, hails from Orussia, an alternate-world counterpart to Russia. Born in Moscow, she grew up in Vienna where her pianist father taught her music. Together, they composed "Sanya's Song," a melody she hums to sustain hope after their separation caused by the Neuroi invasion of the Black Sea area. She clings to the belief her parents survived and hopes for reunion.
Her early magical manifestation attracted the attention of famed Orussian witch Marisha Raskova, leading to recruitment into the Orussian 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, a training unit for beginner witches. After training, she became a Pilot Officer and later transferred to the multinational 501st Joint Fighter Wing, earning promotion to Flying Officer. She specializes in night operations, leveraging her unique sensory magic and nocturnal tendencies.
Sanya exhibits an introverted, reserved nature, often seeming ghostlike or ephemeral to teammates due to her near-silent presence and daytime fatigue. While she struggles socially, she deeply values companionship. Her closest bond is with patrol partner Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen; they rely on each other mutually, with Eila acting protectively. Sanya bristles at Eila's flirtations but remains devoted. She also forms meaningful connections with Yoshika Miyafuji, sharing a birthday, and Erica Hartmann, surprising observers with their lengthy conversations.
Her primary magic, Hirschgeweih Dipoles, grants extreme long-range detection through radio wave manipulation. Activated, it manifests cat-like ears and a tail, allowing her to sense objects beyond the horizon, penetrate cloaking, identify speed/altitude/heading, and interface with radio transmissions, making her vital for night patrols. She initially used a Fliegerhammer rocket launcher and Type99-2-2 machine gun, later adopting a Mid-Childan Storage Device named "Flight Hammer," which offers multiple combat modes while honoring her original weapon. Her Striker Unit is modeled after the MiG60, supporting extended nocturnal flights.
Key developments include forming a night-combat team with Eila and Yoshika to counter Neuroi targeting her abilities. After the 501st's temporary disbandment following Gallia's liberation, she and Eila traveled to Suomus, stationing at Kauhava Airbase on leave to search for her parents. There, she befriended local witches like Nikka Edvardine Katajainen. During the 501st's reformation in Romagna, she destroyed a high-altitude Neuroi spire core using rocket boosters. This operation briefly fractured her bond with Eila until Yoshika intervened to reaffirm their trust. She also participated in a movie project to spread awareness of her parent search, enduring mishaps like a ketchup dousing for special effects.
In expanded media, Sanya joined the Union's Mobile Section Six (codenamed Gale 2) and studied under Nanoha Takamachi. This led to adopting Mid-Childan magic and a Barrier Jacket resembling her father's military uniform. She later commanded Novas Team, a Strike Witches unit within the same group, drawing on her multiverse experience. During a significant multiverse event, she briefly reunited with her father in a dreamlike version of their pre-invasion home, strengthening her resolve. She also operated in Mitakihara Town, collaborating with magical girls like Homura Akemi and Mami Tomoe to demonstrate not all witches are hostile.
