TV-Series
Description
Rin Tohsaka oversees Illya's activities as a magus. Her background diverges: her family had no involvement in the Holy Grail War and was unaware of the Einzberns, though her sister Sakura remained adopted by the Matous. Rin fell for Shirou Emiya after watching his persistent high jump attempts, displaying these feelings more openly than in other timelines. She gained early admission to the Mage's Association directly after middle school, becoming a pupil of Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg. Zelretch assigned her and Luvia Edelfelt to retrieve Class Cards using the Kaleidosticks Ruby and Sapphire; Ruby later abandoned Rin for Illya.
Her appearance features blue eyes and long black hair tied with twin ribbons. Typical attire includes a red shirt, black miniskirt, and thigh-high stockings. Casual outfits often incorporate red accents and emphasize leg exposure. As a magical girl, she wears a red-and-white dress with a cloak and animal ears, resembling her *Fate/hollow ataraxia* design.
Rin remains resourceful, perceptive, and serious but exhibits heightened concern for Sakura, especially upon learning of alternate Sakura's tragic fates. Her rivalry with Luvia intensifies, leading to destructive confrontations often stemming from their mutual affection for Shirou, though an underlying friendship exists. Financial constraints prompt her to prioritize high-paying jobs despite personal pride. She displays increased self-consciousness about her chest size, frequently noted by Ruby and Luvia.
In *3rei!!*, Rin and Luvia are captured by the Ainsworths, brainwashed, and transformed into their servants. Under Angelica's control, they pursue Illya using Nameless Class Cards. Freed from mind control by Gilgamesh and Bazett, Rin rejoins Illya's group. During the conflict, she catches an alternate Shirou Emiya following severe injuries from Sakura and Beatrice. Her healing magic proves insufficient until Bazett returns her pendant, enabling Shirou's recovery. Rin reacts with visible distress upon learning of Sakura's tragic end in Miyu's world.
When Sakura attempts to kill Shirou, Rin and Luvia intervene with Gandr curses. Rin emotionally appeals to Sakura as her "older sister," prompting Sakura to reject her due to her Rin's death five years prior. Rin expresses relief that they could have lived as siblings in that world. Later, she deduces that Sakura preserved her heart in Imaginary Numbers Space before Shinji could destroy it, allowing Sakura's return and use of Rule Breaker to save Shirou.
Her abilities include standard jewel-based magecraft, Gandr curses fired from her finger, and healing magic—which she acknowledges has limitations. She occasionally employs the Azoth Sword for rituals requiring multiple jewels. A notable technique is "Thor's Hammer," an eight-step jewel ritual recited in German that amplifies allies' attacks: "Vom Ersten zum Achten. Sequenzaktivierung.– Erstens, Frühlingsdonner... Wirbel."
