Description
Gorgo, also called Lord Mazo or Maso in Japan, first emerged during the kamishibai (paper theater) period of the Ogon Bat franchise as a henchman of Dr. Zero. Specific details about his debut story and appearance from this era elude modern records due to lost and obscure original materials. Following a long absence, Gorgo resurfaced in the 1967 anime adaptation, serving as the secondary antagonist and Dr. Zero's right-hand man, commanding the Nazo Army.

His exact origins and early life, including the reasons for joining Dr. Zero, lack documentation, though some accounts imply possible coercion. He acted as a hands-on lieutenant, personally undertaking tasks like managing labor, executing sabotage, and overseeing weapon or giant robot construction. Gorgo displayed genuine loyalty to Dr. Zero despite exhibiting cowardice when facing his wrath after failures against Ogon Bat (Phantaman). He skillfully managed Zero's impatience during crises. Gorgo possessed scientific acumen, inventing various weapons—some surpassing Zero's in utility—though they frequently proved ineffective against the superhero.

Gorgo's personality blended cruelty, sadism, and arrogance, often abusing subordinates like Dr. Zero abused him. He showed no remorse for violent acts, including endangering civilians, and occasionally taunted enemies. Despite his intelligence, he could be clumsy and prone to emotional outbursts when plans failed. He also exhibited humor, singing to subordinates or delivering witty remarks. Gorgo demonstrated notable physical resilience, surviving explosions, falls, and attacks from Ogon Bat, sometimes escaping via parachute.

No visual records exist from his kamishibai era. In the anime, he appeared as a tall, lean, elderly humanoid with beige skin, yellow sclera (sometimes inconsistently white), black pupils, and medium stone-gray hair swept across his forehead. His attire was a magenta overcoat with red accents and triangular cuts, a blue-lined shirt, matching blue pants, and shoes.

In the series finale, Gorgo fled Dr. Zero's fortress in fear after Zero abandoned their mission upon learning Ogon Bat survived. His ultimate fate—whether he perished in the fortress's explosion or escaped—remains unresolved.

Trivia notes include the similarity between his Japanese name "Mazo" and Dr. Zero's alias "Nazo," and the occasional use of "Maso," interpreted as a shortening of "masochist." His species is indeterminate; while largely humanoid, his yellow sclera suggested possible mutation or non-human traits.
