Description
Ann Takamaki is a second-year student at Shujin Academy. Her mixed Japanese and American heritage (one-quarter American) and striking platinum blonde hair and blue eyes make her a target for rumors and social isolation. Her parents, internationally traveling fashion designers, leave her in the care of others in Japan, deepening her sense of alienation. Shiho Suzui, her sole close friend, defends her against gossip and becomes her emotional anchor.

She endures sexual harassment from volleyball coach Suguru Kamoshida, who threatens Shiho's position on the team if Ann refuses his advances. Rumors spread that she is having an affair with Kamoshida, further isolating her. After Kamoshida's abuse drives Shiho to attempt suicide, Ann discovers the Metaverse cognitive world. She infiltrates Kamoshida's Palace with fellow students Ren Amamiya and Ryuji Sakamoto. Captured by Kamoshida's cognitive version of her—depicted in a degrading bikini and cat ears—Ann awakens her Persona Carmen out of protective rage for her friends. This empowers her to destroy her cognitive double. She joins the Phantom Thieves as Panther, adopting a red catsuit, panther mask, and whip.

As a Phantom Thief, she evolves from a withdrawn victim into a determined vigilante, channeling her trauma into fighting corruption. She struggles with guilt over Shiho’s suffering, believing she failed to protect her or challenge Kamoshida effectively. Her character arc focuses on overcoming self-blame and embracing personal strength. In her Confidant storyline, she pursues modeling and acting but faces manipulation from rival Mika; confronting Mika helps Ann commit to her career authentically. She reconnects with Shiho before her transfer, resolving to live without regrets. This culminates in her Persona evolving from Carmen to Hecate, symbolizing deeper self-acceptance.

In the alternate reality created by Takuto Maruki (Persona 5 Royal), Ann initially accepts a world where Shiho never suffered under Kamoshida and becomes a star athlete. Recognizing this as an illusion, she rejects the false reality with the Phantom Thieves, restoring the true timeline. Her Persona further evolves to Célestine if her Confidant bond is fully realized. Later, in Persona 5 Strikers, she empathizes deeply with antagonist Alice Hiiragi due to their shared experiences as bullied outsiders, resolving to help Alice atone rather than condemn her.

She operates as a Phantom Thief in spin-offs including Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, Persona 5 Strikers, and Persona 5 Tactica. In crossover media like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, she appears as a background character on the Mementos stage in her Panther outfit and participates in Joker's All-Out Attack. She is also featured as an Advanced-class Spirit representing her Phantom Thief identity.
