Description
Umi, a spirited boy brimming with infectious energy, radiates fierce loyalty and warmth toward his companions. He forges an immediate bond with Ruka, a human girl, his fondness for her deepening into profound devotion. His dynamic with older brother Sora is anchored in mutual guardianship, forged through a childhood marked by isolation.

Raised among a dugong pack in the ocean’s depths, Umi and Sora were later captured for study at a coastal lab. Their aquatic upbringing left their bodies fragile, sparking fears of shortened lifespans. This heritage fuels Umi’s dependence on the sea and his kinship with its creatures.

Oceanic forces course through Umi: he breathes effortlessly underwater, darts through currents with unnatural speed, and communes with marine life, interpreting oceanic whispers—from schools of fish to the scent of typhoons carrying traces of Sora. These gifts tie him to worldwide phenomena: cetaceans migrating en masse, comets plunging into tides.

His bonds mirror his origins. Ruka remains his confidante, sharing secrets of bioluminescent bays and hidden reefs. Jim, a marine biologist, straddles roles as both guardian and scientist, observing their adaptations while offering paternal support. The dugongs who nurtured him embody his untamed bond with the ocean.

Umi’s journey centers on his pivotal role in The Festival, a celestial convergence probing life’s genesis and mankind’s fragile pact with nature. In the climax, he navigates a metaphysical voyage to life’s primordial roots, his essence merging with universal cycles of death and rebirth. His choices during this trial test his bonds with Sora and Ruka, cementing his role as a living conduit between land and sea.
