TV-Series
Description
Wiene is a Vouivre-type Xenos, a sentient monster born within the Dungeon possessing human-like intelligence and emotions. She first appears during Bell Cranel's exploration of the Dungeon's middle floors, where he finds her under attack by adventurers and other monsters. After her rescue by Bell, she is taken to the surface and sheltered by the Hestia Familia, beginning her integration into their group.
Physically, Wiene has long blue hair, amber eyes, and pale blue-white skin, featuring a jewel called "Vouivre's Tear" embedded in her forehead. Unlike typical snake-bodied Vouivre, she possesses human legs. Her height is noted as 150 cm in the light novels but depicted as 130 cm in anime adaptations. Initially, her sharp claws pose a danger until Welf Crozzo modifies them to prevent harm. Intense emotions can trigger the temporary growth of wings.
Her personality displays profound innocence, curiosity, and a childlike worldview. She exhibits kindness and empathy, often expressing concern for others. She forms strong bonds with the Hestia Familia, viewing Bell Cranel and Haruhime Sanjouno as parental figures, and adapts quickly to their protective environment with unwavering trust.
Wiene emerges uniquely within the Dungeon, facing immediate hostility from adventurers and monsters, leading to isolation and fear before her rescue. After joining the Hestia Familia, she initially finds acceptance but overhears Liliruca Arde expressing concerns about the risks of harboring a monster. Believing her presence endangers them, Wiene voluntarily leaves.
Her attempt to integrate into human society ends tragically when she saves a child from a falling carriage. Despite this heroic act, bystanders perceive her only as a monster and respond violently, throwing stones. Though the Hestia Familia rescues her again, this incident reinforces her feeling of not belonging on the surface.
Subsequently, the Hestia Familia accepts a quest from the god Uranus to escort Wiene to a hidden sanctuary on the Dungeon's 20th floor, home to other Xenos. There, she encounters beings like Lido and Rei, experiencing kinship with others like herself for the first time. For safety, she decides to remain with them, separating from Bell and the familia.
Her story darkens when the Ikelos Familia captures her, intending to sell her as a rare specimen. Under the influence of Dix Perdix's magic, she is driven into a berserk state, causing chaos on the surface. During the conflict, Gran fatally wounds her with a spear. She dies after conveying her gratitude and feelings to Bell.
Fels later resurrects Wiene using the forbidden magic "Dear Orpheus," an outcome partly attributed to Bell Cranel's "Lucky" skill. Following her return to life, she remains in hiding with other Xenos but becomes determined to repay Bell and the Hestia Familia. She demonstrates bravery by intervening in dangerous situations, such as rescuing civilians during building collapses or aiding Ryuu Lion, despite risks of public exposure and hostility.
A pivotal moment occurs when Bell confronts Ais Wallenstein to protect Wiene. Unable to bear witnessing Bell's suffering, Wiene emerges to face Ais directly. She offers to break her own claws and wings as proof of her peaceful intentions. This act, coupled with Ais recognizing parallels to her own past, results in Ais sparing Wiene, allowing her safe return to the Dungeon.
In later events, Wiene actively participates in high-stakes missions, including a rescue operation into the Dungeon's deep floors to save Bell Cranel. She also joins the Knossos Operation, assisting surface dwellers as a gesture of gratitude, signifying her ongoing commitment to bridge the divide between Xenos and humans.
Bell Cranel initially suggested the name "Wilyujine," inspired by the legend of Melusine, a winged fairy who married a human. Other Hestia Familia members found this name overly elaborate, leading to the shortened form "Wiene." Haruhime Sanjouno later identifies the connection to the Melusine tale.
