Description
Kaito Kuroba operates internationally as the phantom thief Kaito Kid, an identity inherited from his father, Toichi Kuroba. Toichi originated the role but was murdered during a staged magic accident by a criminal organization hunting the Pandora gem. After Toichi's death, family attendant Konosuke Jii temporarily became Kaito Kid to lure out the killers. Eight years later, Kaito discovered his father's secret room, learned the truth, and took up the mantle himself. His primary goal as Kaito Kid is to investigate his father's murderers by executing high-profile jewel heists, aiming to draw out the organization and locate Pandora—a legendary doublet gem said to grant immortality by shedding tears under the passing of Volley's Comet. Kaito vows to find and destroy Pandora before the organization can misuse it, examining every stolen gem under moonlight and returning it if unrelated.
Kaito Kid's personality blends audacity, theatrical showmanship, and a strict moral code. He issues advance notices for heists, relishes outwitting law enforcement and rivals like Conan Edogawa and Saguru Hakuba, and consistently avoids harming anyone. Despite his flamboyant arrogance and penchant for dramatic escapes, he demonstrates compassion by rescuing endangered individuals and returning stolen items. He maintains a gentleman thief ethos, refusing to steal for personal gain and openly mocking adversaries. He harbors severe ichthyophobia, causing extreme panic when confronted with fish or aquatic life, a vulnerability exploited in scenarios like his escape from Trap Island where a fish in his rowboat triggered distress.
His capabilities as Kaito Kid are extensive. He possesses an IQ of 400, photographic memory, and exceptional strategic acumen, enabling complex heist planning and rapid improvisation. He is a master of disguise, flawlessly mimicking appearances, voices, and mannerisms, even impersonating Shinichi Kudo masklessly due to their natural resemblance. As a stage magician, he excels in sleight of hand, misdirection, escapology, and ventriloquism, utilizing signature tools like smoke bombs, card guns, and a hang-glider cape. Athletic prowess allows him to perform acrobatics, skiing, hang-gliding, and sharpshooting, though he struggles with ice skating and billiards. Supplementary skills include lockpicking, safecracking, hacking, artistry, and driving various vehicles.
In the context of *Conan vs Kid - Shark & Jewel*, Kaito Kid's ichthyophobia becomes narratively significant. The title's reference to "Shark" aligns with his established vulnerability to marine life, suggesting this phobia is leveraged against him during a jewel-related confrontation with Conan Edogawa. This short film reflects broader portrayals where his fear complicates heists or escapes, consistent with panicking upon encountering fish-print underwear or a live fish in confined spaces.
Kaito Kid's civilian identity is Kaito Kuroba, posing as a 17-year-old Ekoda High School student alongside childhood friend Aoko Nakamori—who unknowingly despises his phantom thief persona—and rival detective Saguru Hakuba. His double life strains relationships but fuels his resolve to dismantle the organization responsible for his father's death, a mission extending across all his appearances.
