Description
Hanamaru Kunikida hails from a family overseeing a local temple for generations, leading to an upbringing largely isolated from modern technology. This environment cultivated her profound appreciation for books, especially Japanese literature, and drew her to volunteer frequently at her school library as a quiet refuge. Her limited exposure to contemporary devices fuels a childlike fascination with everyday technology, often prompting her exclamation "Mirai zura!" ("It's the future, zura!") upon encountering items like computers or hand dryers.

She speaks with a distinctive Shizuoka dialect, regularly using "ora" as a first-person pronoun and ending sentences with "zura," creating a recognizable speech pattern among peers. Hanamaru maintains close friendships with Ruby Kurosawa, whom she met in middle school, and Yoshiko Tsushima, a kindergarten classmate. She demonstrates particular attentiveness to Ruby's well-being, frequently prioritizing Ruby's confidence and happiness over her own interests—evident when she orchestrates opportunities for Ruby to pursue school idol activities despite initial resistance from Ruby's sister, Dia.

Hanamaru initially dismisses invitations to join the school idol group Aqours due to deep-seated insecurities about her appearance, physical abilities, and self-perceived lack of appeal, calling herself a "chibi procrastinator" who is "neither cute nor interesting." This self-deprecation parallels Rin Hoshizora from μ's, an idol she admires. Though harboring a secret interest in idols, she returns to the library after a trial period, viewing it as a failure. Her eventual decision to join comes after Ruby shares Rin’s journey toward self-confidence, inspiring Hanamaru to support her friend while confronting her own doubts.

As a member of Aqours and its subunit AZALEA, her singing talent—honed through choir participation—becomes integral to the group. Her development involves balancing her bookish nature with newfound idol experiences. While embracing this role, she retains core traits: her appetite (often seen eating noppo bread or sweets), playful teasing of Yoshiko’s "Fallen Angel" persona alongside Ruby, and observant, considerate interactions. Her style incorporates yellow, symbolizing happiness and intellect, and reflects her conservative upbringing through modest clothing like long leggings and cardigans.

In later arcs, including the movie *Over the Rainbow*, Hanamaru and her peers face Uranohoshi High School’s closure and separation from graduating members. These challenges underscore her reliance on group unity and shared purpose. Her journey culminates in greater self-assurance, reflected in her interim lead position during Aqours’ fourth single "center idol" poll—a first for her character.
