Description
Zaruba is a sentient Madō Ring originally created as a benevolent Horror who chose coexistence with humans over predation. This decision led to a pact with the Golden Knight lineage, offering guidance in exchange for periodic life force absorption from its wielder. The contract transformed him into a classified Madōgu tool aligned with the Makai Order, causing him to lose his Horror designation over time.
In *The Carved Seal of Flames*, he serves the Golden Knight bloodline, specifically León Luís and Alfonso San Valiante. Zaruba suppresses León’s inherited magical flames to prevent berserker rampages, absorbing a day of the wielder’s life monthly and leaving them weakened during new moons. After León relinquishes his flames permanently during Mendoza’s defeat, Zaruba ceases this suppression but continues as an advisor and Horror detector. Temporarily reassigned to Alfonso when León is deemed unworthy, he returns once León proves his resolve as a true protector.
During *Divine Flame*, set four years later, Zaruba aids León in training his half-brother Roberto and investigating the Horror Nigra Venus. He warns León about fallen Makai Knight Dario Montoya’s suspicious motives during their mission to rescue Roberto, showcasing his tactical advisory role and distrust of compromised allies.
In *Crimson Moon*, Zaruba appears in the Heian era under the Minamoto clan’s ownership. The onmyōji Seimei seals him to control the Garo armor’s summoning, petrifying him unless she permits activation. After his wielder Raikou breaks the seal permanently, Zaruba regains sentience but with dulled Horror-detection abilities due to prolonged inactivity.
*Vanishing Line* reimagines Zaruba as a Madō Motorcycle key for the modern Golden Knight, Sword. Inserted into Sword’s motorcycle, he possesses the vehicle to grant combat capabilities like grappling arms, soul-metal plating, and Horror-tracking sigils through light emissions. He sacrifices this form to intercept the Horror Knight, resulting in destruction. His remnants temporarily empower Sword’s Garo armor before Makai Alchemists rebuild him as an enhanced dragon-themed motorcycle with flight-capable armor and integrated Madō Fire.
Across other media, Zaruba serves multiple Golden Knights. In the live-action series, he guides Kouga Saejima and later Raiga Saejima, facing temporary destruction during Kouga’s battle against Kiba before being reforged without memories.
