Description
Within the universe of A Certain Magical Index, the figure commonly referred to as Misaka's younger sister is not a single individual but a designation for the Misaka Sisters, a series of over twenty thousand cloned copies of the third-ranked Level 5 esper, Mikoto Misaka. The most prominent and frequently encountered individual among them is the 10032nd clone, often called Misaka 10032 or simply Misaka Imouto. Another significant figure is the 20001st clone, known as Last Order, who serves as a command node for the network. These clones were originally created through the Radio Noise Project, using Mikoto Misaka's DNA map, with the initial goal of mass-producing Level 5 espers. When that project failed to produce espers above Level 3, the clones were repurposed for the Level 6 Shift Project, an experiment designed to elevate the strongest Level 5 esper, Accelerator, to the next level of power by having him kill them in a series of staged battles.

The clones share the same physical appearance as Mikoto Misaka, but are typically distinguished by their use of military-grade goggles and their notably flat, emotionless expressions. Their personalities, however, are not completely uniform. While they generally speak in a distinctive, third-person style and have a similar blunt or mildly short-tempered disposition to their original, they begin to develop subtle individual differences as they gain more life experience. Misaka 10032, for instance, displays a fondness for animals, especially cats, and shows a quiet capacity for care and affection, particularly toward the protagonist, Touma Kamijou. Their motivations shift dramatically over the course of the story. Initially, they accept their fate as expendable test subjects, viewing themselves as replaceable and not truly human. As a result of being saved by Touma and meeting others who treat them as people, they develop a will to live and a desire to protect one another. Their core motivation becomes survival and the preservation of their collective identity.

In the story, the Sisters play a pivotal role as both the victims of the Level 6 Shift Project and the catalyst for much of the moral conflict in the early arcs. Their existence forces several major characters, including Touma, Mikoto, and Accelerator, to confront the ethics of the scientific establishment within Academy City. Misaka 10032 serves as the clone that Touma most directly interacts with, and it is his intervention during the 10032nd experiment that leads to the end of the killing project. After the project is halted, the surviving clones are sent to hospitals and research institutions worldwide for treatment to address the genetic flaws inherent in their accelerated growth.

Key relationships define the Sisters' development. Their bond with Mikoto Misaka is complex; she initially feels immense guilt and responsibility for their creation and suffering, and later works to protect them. Their relationship with Touma Kamijou is one of profound gratitude, and Misaka 10032 develops romantic feelings for him, which she expresses more directly than Mikoto does. Perhaps the most transformative relationship is with Accelerator. He begins as their murderer but, after being defeated by Touma and meeting Last Order, becomes one of their most dedicated protectors. Last Order, in particular, forms a close, almost paternal bond with him. The clones, especially Last Order and Misaka 10032, are instrumental in Accelerator's redemption arc.

Their notable abilities stem from their esper power, Radio Noise, a weak electrical manipulation ability that generally ranks them at Level 2 or Level 3. While individually far weaker than Mikoto Misaka, their true strength lies in the Misaka Network, a psychic link that connects the minds of all Sisters. Through this network, they can share memories, communicate instantaneously, perform parallel processing, and coordinate complex tactical maneuvers as a single organism. This network also allows them to function as a failsafe and control mechanism for one another, with Last Order acting as the administrator. The Sisters are also trained in combat and proficient with firearms and military equipment, compensating for their limited individual esper power. Throughout the series, their development is marked by a gradual acquisition of individuality, emotion, and a deepened understanding of what it means to exist as a person, moving from expendable tools to autonomous beings fighting for their right to live.
