Description
Kotarou Katsura stands as a central figure in the narrative, recognized as the leader of a moderate Joui faction and a fugitive wanted by the authorities. He specializes in strategic retreats, evasion, and the handling of explosives.

His background is marked by childhood tragedy, losing both parents to illness and becoming homeless with his grandmother. From her, he learned that a great warrior must be cautious and fearful to survive and lead effectively—a philosophy that came to define his approach to life and conflict. His intelligence earned him a scholarship to a prestigious military school, where he befriended Takasugi Shinsuke. Together they met Yoshida Shouyou, left their studies, and joined his free school alongside Sakata Gintoki. The Kansei Purge and Shouyou’s arrest spurred them to launch the Joui War in an effort to save him. During the conflict, Katsura earned two nicknames: “Runaway Kotarou” for his tactical withdrawals and “The Noble Youth of Madness” for his calm demeanor in combat. The war ended with their teacher’s execution, which Katsura witnessed before he and his comrades separated. For the next ten years, he continued his anti-government activities underground, forming his own faction and gathering intelligence on the Bakufu.

In appearance, he has long black hair, hazel eyes, and an attractive, somewhat effeminate demeanor. He typically wears a blue kimono with a yellow sash, a pale blue haori, and white socks with slippers, suggesting a careful attention to dress and conduct. As a wanted man, he often uses disguises to move through public spaces, though they tend to be unconvincing.

His personality blends apparent foolishness with underlying genius. Illogical decisions and a lack of common sense can make him seem foolish, contrasting with his childhood reputation as a prodigy. In serious moments, he reveals sharp intelligence and sensibility, demonstrating strong leadership and charisma that earn him his followers’ respect. He is persistent, regularly attempting to recruit Gintoki for his cause. Despite his occasional absurdity, he remains fundamentally polite, using honorifics like “dono” and taking care not to offend. He is thrifty, favoring simple meals like soba, though he enjoys the corn snack nmaibo. He has a soft spot for animals, especially their paw pads, and a noted fondness for housewives, particularly widows and unfaithful wives. Initially filled with hatred and willing to use violence against the government, his outlook shifted after witnessing Gintoki’s choices and a falling out with Takasugi. He began seeking more peaceful solutions and came to value his connections in Edo.

His abilities are considerable. A master swordsman trained by Yoshida Shouyou, he is one of the legendary Joui 4. His combat style can become recklessly offensive, ignoring defense and surging forward like a rampaging beast when fully engaged. He possesses enhanced strength, speed, agility, endurance, and durability, demonstrated in battles against powerful foes like Neptune Shoukaku. He is also a master strategist and tactician, skilled in intelligence gathering, engineering explosives, and devising cunning plans. He is proficient with technology, using computers and electronic devices for communication and coordination. Additionally, he is a master of disguise, adopting many identities and outfits to avoid capture, though they often fail to fool those who know him.

Throughout his journey, Katsura evolves from a revolutionary embracing destructive methods to a leader pursuing change without unnecessary bloodshed, valuing the people and bonds within Edo. His resolve is to be a samurai who is both more cowardly and stronger than anyone else, intent above all on protecting his comrades.
