Description
Matsuo is one of the main characters in the anime UFO Senshi Daiapolon II and serves as a core member of the UFO Shonen Dan, the youth team that assists the protagonist Takeshi in his fight against the Dazaan forces. Matsuo lives at the Blue Sky orphanage alongside Takeshi and the other children who make up the team. When the group is not battling alien threats, they are often seen playing American football, a sport that inspired both their uniforms and the design of the combining robot Daiapolon. Matsuo's combat uniform is yellow and bears the number 22, which visually distinguishes him from the other pilots.

In terms of personality, Matsuo is known for being small in stature but spirited and loud. He tends toward unruly behavior and disobedience, often acting on impulse rather than following orders. Despite this rebellious streak, Matsuo possesses a strong sense of justice and will not hesitate to stand up against anyone, even those who are older or stronger. This courage makes him a reliable ally in dangerous situations, even if his approach can be reckless. His nickname among the group is Choco Matsu, a playful moniker that reflects his youthful and energetic nature.

Matsuo's primary motivation is to protect his friends and the Earth from the invading Dazaan forces. Like the other members of the UFO Shonen Dan, he is deeply loyal to Takeshi and committed to the cause of defending their home. He does not have a personal vendetta against the enemy but fights out of a sense of duty and camaraderie. His role in the story is that of a pilot who operates one of the three component robots that combine to form Daiapolon. Alongside Miki, Goro, and Hideki, Matsuo is essential to the team's operations, both in combat and in supporting the base located beneath the ocean floor.

Key relationships include his bond with Takeshi, the leader of the group, and his friendship with the other orphans. Matsuo is one of the two female members of the team, though this aspect is portrayed subtly and does not define his role. His interactions with the antagonist forces are direct, as he often participates in the front-line battles against the enemy mecha and monsters.

Over the course of UFO Senshi Daiapolon II, Matsuo shows development primarily in his ability to work as part of a team. While he remains spirited and sometimes defiant, his experiences in battle reinforce his sense of responsibility and his willingness to cooperate when the situation demands it. His growth is not marked by dramatic personal revelations but by a steady maturation in how he channels his energy and courage.

Regarding notable abilities, Matsuo does not possess supernatural powers like Takeshi, who wields the Key Energy. Instead, his strength lies in his piloting skills. He controls one of the three separate robots that combine to form Daiapolon, and his coordination with the other pilots is crucial for the successful activation of the combined form. Matsuo's bravery and quick thinking in combat make him a valuable asset, even without unique weapons or special training beyond what is provided to the entire team.
