Description
Goma-chan is a baby spotted seal discovered by Ashiya Ashibe and his family when he tumbled from a moving truck during their relocation. Initially mistaken for a large fish destined for dinner, the family recognized him as a seal and chose to keep him as a pet. His name comes from "gomafu seal," a term found in a book consulted by Ashibe's father for identification.

Physically, he resembles a small white harp seal. He possesses black eyes with prominent white pupils and thin eyebrows matching his eye width. Three black whiskers sprout from each side of his mouth, surrounded by light gray skin that turns pink when his mouth opens. Visually substantial, he is surprisingly lightweight, allowing first-grader Ashibe to lift him easily with one arm. His form is occasionally rendered whale-like in certain depictions, including detailed flippers.

Goma-chan displays high sociability and affection, especially towards Ashibe, playfully nuzzling his face upon their first meeting. He frequently vocalizes with a high-pitched "Kyu!," expressing curiosity or desire, like his intense fascination with ice pops discovered at a public bath. He shows perceptiveness about human interactions, noting resemblances between himself and a classmate.

His daily routine involves closely shadowing Ashibe, even to school, where he interacts amiably with other children. He serves practical household roles, acting as an alarm clock by gently slapping family members awake each morning. Aquatic environments delight him, leading to enthusiastic swimming in baths, pools, and the ocean. However, he harbors a deep-seated aversion to cats stemming from being used as a scratching post, prompting attempts to avoid or resolve encounters.

Recurring preferences define Goma-chan: he persistently seeks ice pops, mistakes the mail for treats and tries to retrieve it, and becomes excited during outings to aquariums or beaches. His bond with the Ashibe family involves mutual protective efforts, such as shielding him from cats or ensuring his comfort in hot weather with beach visits.
