Description
Kazumi Yoshida is a human student at Misaki Municipal High School and lifelong resident of Misaki City. She has short light brown hair typically adorned with two orange hair clips and a prominent white ribbon forming a cross shape above the bow. Standing approximately 158-160 cm tall, she possesses a light complexion, brown eyes, and a well-developed figure usually concealed by everyday attire like her school uniform. Kazumi battles a weak constitution and anemia, contributing to her initial reserve.

Profoundly shy, polite, and introverted, she often uses honorifics and maintains a modest presence, rarely standing out in class. Despite her timidity, she develops strong feelings for classmate Yuji Sakai early on but struggles to confess. As her rivalry with Shana over Yuji intensifies, Kazumi evolves, displaying growing confidence, resoluteness, and occasional competitiveness. She proves perceptive, recognizing Shana's feelings for Yuji before Shana does, and shows kindness, attempting to connect with the Crimson Denizen Pheles over shared experiences of unrequited love.

Her family includes parents and a younger brother, Ken. Her hobbies include cooking, a skill she frequently uses to prepare meals for Yuji. Before her involvement, she had no exposure to the supernatural conflicts of Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens.

Her involvement begins when the Flame Haze Khamsin Nbh'w recruits her for the Tuning ritual, designed to suppress distortions in Misaki City caused by vanished humans and Denizens. He selects her due to her deep attachment to the city and strong sense of its normal state. During this time, he reveals the existence of Torches—replacements for consumed humans—and provides her with an eyeglass relic to detect them. She later confirms Yuji's status as a Torch during the Misago Festival, eventually accepting his unique condition as the bearer of the Reiji Maigo (Midnight Lost Child), preventing his disappearance. Kazumi retains another relic from Khamsin allowing movement within Fuzetsu (Seals).

Her role expands when Pheles entrusts her with the cross-shaped Treasure Tool Giralda. This artifact enables summoning Pheles during emergencies but allegedly consumes the user's entire Power of Existence upon activation. Accepting this potential sacrifice, Kazumi resolves to use it to protect others. Abducted to the floating fortress Seireiden to serve as a catalyst for reversing Khamsin's Tuning during the conflict involving the Snake of the Festival's control over Yuji, she activates Giralda to summon Pheles in a critical battle. Contrary to warnings, the tool does not consume her existence; instead, it demands intense focus and causes severe physical strain, rendering her unconscious. Her youth prevents fatal consequences. While unconscious, Johann and Pheles appear in her dreams, entrusting her with their memories and their only child.

Kazumi openly confesses her feelings to Yuji, facing rejection when he returns her letters without response, implicitly choosing Shana. After the supernatural conflict's resolution, Yuji utilizes her memories and mental concept of Misaki City to restore humans whose existences were absorbed by Crimson Denizens, including her friend Yukari Hirai. She then returns to ordinary human life. In non-canonical spin-offs like Shakugan no Shana-tan, an alternate version dubbed "Black Yoshida" depicts her as maliciously obsessive toward Yuji and antagonistic toward Shana.
