Description
Yuuji Sakai began as an ordinary high school student in Misaki City until discovering his existence as a Torch—a fading remnant of a deceased human. Uniquely, he was a Mystes containing the Treasure Tool Midnight Lost Child. This artifact replenished his Power of Existence nightly at midnight, granting functional immortality provided he conserved energy. This revelation drew him into the conflict between Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens.
Initially kind and selfless, Yuuji maintained calm in crises, prioritizing others' safety even at the cost of his limited lifespan, such as repairing classroom damage. Yet he remained socially oblivious, particularly to romantic feelings from Shana and classmate Kazumi Yoshida. Training under Shana and later Margery Daw to combat Denizens, he developed strategic thinking and combat skills, occasionally becoming overconfident.
His personality darkened over time. He grew colder and detached, rejecting Kazumi's gifts by citing their differing worlds. He demonstrated ruthlessness, killing duplicates of the Denizen Zarovee. After Bal Masqué implanted a transmitter in the Midnight Lost Child, he intensified his training but planned to leave Misaki City to protect it—a decision Shana criticized as self-deceptive.
His transformation peaked upon merging with the Snake of the Festival, a Crimson God seeking to end the Flame Haze-Denizen conflict by creating the paradise Xanadu. As the Snake's vessel, Yuuji exhibited extreme emotional detachment and cruelty. He psychologically tormented Margery Daw by revealing the truth about the Silver, manipulated Kazumi's feelings for strategy, and defeated and imprisoned Shana, stripping her powers while claiming it was for their future. His demeanor became eerily calm, often smiling during confrontations.
During the Xanadu conflict, Johann—the Midnight Lost Child's creator—criticized Yuuji for underestimating love and distrusting Shana. Yuuji later acknowledged this flaw, admitting sharing his plans with Shana might have averted the conflict. After Shana defeated him and reaffirmed her love, he accepted her forgiveness but resolved to atone alone by guiding Denizens in Xanadu. Shana rejected this, insisting on accompanying him. Their kiss activated Lamia's Grammatica spell, restoring Yuuji's humanity and ending his Torch existence. He then used Lamia's second spell to restore Misaki City's consumed humans before departing with Shana for Xanadu.
