Ayre's career encompasses both on-screen roles in live-action television and film, as well as extensive work in voice acting for animation. Much of his voice acting for anime was produced by Ocean Productions, a prominent voice-over studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia. His contributions to the industry are primarily from the early to mid-2000s.

One of his most notable roles is providing the English voice for the main character, Yuji Sakai, in the first season of the popular anime series Shakugan no Shana. His portrayal of Yuji is featured in the main series episodes as well as in the associated specials, Shakugan no Shana-tan and Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū!. Another significant early role was as Taishi Takamura in the 1993-1994 original video animation series Alien Defender Geo-Armor: Kishin Corps.

In addition to these roles, Ayre lent his voice to the English adaptation of the InuYasha film, InuYasha the Movie: Fire on the Mystic Island, released in 2004. His work in these productions highlights a period of consistent activity in anime dubbing, where he frequently took on lead roles for English-language adaptations aimed at the North American market.
