Description
Margery Daw is a Flame Haze, a human contractor bound to the Crimson Lord Marchosias. Marchosias expresses his will through the divine vessel Grimoire, a book Margery wields. Her titles are "Chanter of Elegies" and "Interpreter of Condolence." She appears as a tall, mature European woman with blue eyes and stands approximately 1.73 meters tall. Her hair is depicted as brown in the light novels and blonde in the anime adaptations; she often ties it back. Her typical attire includes a purple suit, a choker, high heels, and decorative glasses, despite possessing perfect vision.

Her background traces to medieval England, where she was a landlord's daughter. She initially derived purpose from being relied upon, but repeated betrayals led to her father's death and forced her into a brothel. This trauma fueled a deep desire for vengeance against those who caused her suffering. The opportunity for revenge was stolen when a Denizen known as the Silver annihilated her targets before she could act. This loss left her empty and consumed by bitterness. Marchosias approached her, offering a contract to become a Flame Haze. Her primary motivation shifted to hunting the Silver, whom she blamed for robbing her of her last reason to live.

Margery exhibits an aggressive, combative nature and a short temper, traits making her notorious among other Flame Hazes. She prioritizes destroying Crimson Denizens over the Flame Hazes' traditional duty of maintaining the Balance between worlds. She arrogantly demands compliance from others. Her habitual alcohol consumption exacerbates her tendencies; despite her enhanced physiology, she possesses low alcohol tolerance and frequently drinks to cope with frustration or boredom. Her relationship with Marchosias involves constant exchanges of vitriol, though their bond runs deep. Marchosias once vowed to manifest destructively on Earth to protect her if she were killed.

In combat, Margery activates spells by chanting the "Improvisational Poem of Slaughter," a duet performed with Marchosias. Her abilities include creating a Fuzetsu (a dimensional seal halting causality and time for ordinary beings), firing energy blasts, generating explosive clones, and unleashing barrages of energy projectiles. Her signature power involves merging with Marchosias to transform into an ultramarine wolf-like creature. This form significantly enhances her strength, speed, durability, and regenerative capabilities – such as regrowing severed limbs – by channeling the Power of Existence. It amplifies her destructive capacity to city-block or city-level scales with preparation. She also manipulates fire and exerts limited reality manipulation within her spells.

Her character development unfolds across the series. After an unsuccessful battle against the Silver, she nearly dies confronting Snake of the Festival (merged with Sakai Yuuji). During recovery, she reflects on the Silver's role in fulfilling her wish for vengeance and reassesses her motivations. A pivotal moment occurs when Keisaku Satou, one of her human followers whose life she once saved, confesses his love and kisses her. This act gives her a new purpose beyond vengeance. She reciprocates his feelings, symbolizing her transition from a vengeance-driven existence to one embracing protective and relational commitments. She continues fighting, now acknowledging the importance of maintaining the Balance while retaining her formidable combat skills.

Margery interacts with human characters, notably Keisaku Satou and Eita Tanaka, whom she initially exploits for practicality but later values as allies. She offers blunt but insightful advice on themes like love and envy, exemplified by her counsel to Kazumi Yoshida and Matake Ogata about understanding others to overcome jealousy. Her quotes, such as "I will kill him no matter what. If it's for that cause, I will sacrifice anything," underscore her single-minded dedication prior to her emotional evolution.
