Description
Margery Daw is a tall, mature Flame Haze with long blonde hair typically tied in a high ponytail, blue eyes, and rimless spectacles, giving her the appearance of a woman in her early twenties. She holds the title of Chanter of Elegies and is bound to the Crimson Lord Marchosias, who manifests his will through the book Grimoire that she carries. Margery is known for her heavy drinking habit, her brash and belligerent personality, and her reputation as one of the most fearsome and naturally gifted sorcerers among Flame Hazes, having survived for centuries while slaughtering Crimson Denizens indiscriminately.
Her motivations are rooted in a traumatic past. Originally the daughter of a medieval landlord, she suffered a series of betrayals that led to her father being killed and her being forced into a brothel. She later obtained a chance to exact vengeance on those who wronged her, only to see them destroyed first by a powerful Denizen known only as the Silver. The fury of having her reason for living stolen from her drew the attention of Marchosias, who contracted with her and made her a Flame Haze. From that point, her driving goal became to hunt down and destroy the Silver, a pursuit that left little room for anything else. In the anime adaptation, her focus gradually shifts from pure vengeance to a broader commitment to protecting the Balance between worlds, and she herself notes that her combat effectiveness remains undiminished by this change in perspective.
Within the story of Shakugan no Shana S, Margery appears as a supporting character, continuing her ongoing campaign against Denizens. She is a formidable combatant who specializes in chanting spells through her Improvisational Poem of Slaughter, a technique that allows her to unleash devastating attacks. She also possesses the ability to transform into a powerful werewolf-like form, enhancing her physical capabilities and representing the peak of her power. Her reliance on the Power of Unrestraint, channeled through Grimoire, marks her as a distinct and versatile fighter among Flame Hazes.
Her key relationships include her contractual bond with Marchosias, whose grim humor often surfaces through the Grimoire. Among humans, she earns the respect and admiration of the students Eita Tanaka and Keisaku Satou after saving their lives, and they look up to her as a protector. Later in the series, a romantic relationship develops between Margery and Keisaku, which grants her a new emotional anchor and a reason to move forward beyond her thirst for revenge. This development is most pronounced in the light novel storyline, where Margery, after a disastrous confrontation with the Silver and near death at the hands of the Snake of the Festival, recovers through Keisaku’s confession of love, ultimately choosing to embrace a future with him. Throughout her journey, Margery Daw evolves from a vengeance-driven lone hunter into a more balanced individual who can find purpose in protecting others and forming meaningful bonds, while still retaining her ferocious skill and unyielding will in battle.
