TV Special
Description
Mairin is a young and spirited Pokémon Trainer from the Kalos region who becomes an unexpected but devoted traveling companion to the researcher Alain. She is a beginner Trainer, having started her journey with a Chespin she received from Professor Sycamore, a Pokémon she affectionately nicknames Chespie. Chespie almost always travels outside of its Poké Ball, staying close by her side.
In terms of appearance, Mairin is a short girl with fair skin, bright orange eyes, and spiky maroon hair. Her outfit has a slightly tomboyish feel, consisting of a yellow long-sleeved shirt, a light green cloak with darker green edges, and long dark green pants featuring light green triangular accents. She completes her look with brown suspenders, a yellowish-orange scarf tied with a ribbon, gray socks, brown shoes, a small bracelet, and a distinct green hat with orange triangles and a yellow pompom on top.
Personality-wise, Mairin is defined by her persistent, cheeky, and adventurous nature. Despite being a novice, she possesses a forceful determination and is not easily deterred. She is notably clumsy, often tripping or falling, a trait her ever-vigilant Chespin helps mitigate by using its vines to catch her. Her enthusiasm for adventure is matched by a deep, burgeoning loyalty to those she cares about, particularly Alain. While she can be emotionally vulnerable, especially when feeling rejected or when her friends are in danger, she consistently demonstrates courage, willing to put herself at risk to protect Alain, even when it means facing terrifying legendary Pokémon.
Mairin’s primary motivation is a desire to learn about and experience Mega Evolution. This goal is ignited when she secretly witnesses Alain’s battle against Astrid and his Mega Charizard X. Intrigued by this incredible power, she decides to follow him, believing he is the best person to learn from, and she stubbornly persists despite his repeated requests to be left alone. Over time, her motivation evolves from simple curiosity to a profound concern for Alain’s safety and, most critically, to a desperate mission to save Chespie when her partner falls into a mysterious coma.
In the events of Mega Evolution Special III, Mairin’s role is significant. She accompanies Alain and Steven Stone to the Devon Corporation headquarters in Rustboro City to monitor the activities of the Primal Pokémon, Groudon and Kyogre. While initially excited, her previous traumatic encounter with a furious Rayquaza makes her fearful of getting involved with legendary Pokémon again. When Alain insists she stay behind for her own safety, she disobeys and sneaks onto the helicopter heading to the battle site. During the clash between Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, Alain is knocked unconscious by the force of their attacks. Defying her own fear, Mairin jumps from the helicopter and, with Chespie’s help, drags the unconscious Alain to the safety of a nearby ice cave. This act demonstrates her transition from a passive observer to a proactive protector. After Rayquaza stops the conflict, she is relieved Alain is alive, but their reunion is short-lived as he leaves for Kalos on his own.
Mairin’s key relationships shape her journey. Her central bond is with Alain. Their relationship is one-sided at first, with Mairin’s persistent cheerfulness often clashing with Alain’s solitary, focused demeanor. Despite his attempts to leave her behind, she gradually earns his respect and trust. She is one of the few people who can see past his cold exterior and worries about his reckless pursuit of strength. She also forms a connection with Steven Stone, the Hoenn Champion, who shows her kindness and ultimately offers to fly her back to Kalos to find Alain. Her relationship with her own Pokémon, especially Chespie, is one of deep, mutual affection, with Chespie often saving her from mishaps just as she fights fiercely for its well-being.
Mairin undergoes noticeable development throughout her appearances. She starts as a naive, clumsy tag-along who is more of a hindrance than a help. Through her exposure to dangerous conflicts and legendary Pokémon, she gains resilience and courage. Her defining moment of growth in this special is her choice to confront her fear and risk her life to save Alain, proving her worth not as a burden, but as a loyal and brave friend. This incident solidifies her shift from being a passive admirer of Mega Evolution to an active participant in the high-stakes world surrounding it.
As a Trainer, Mairin’s notable abilities are still developing. She has a basic understanding of Pokémon battle mechanics, as seen when she follows Alain’s advice to use status moves like Toxic to catch a wild Flabébé, which she later nicknames Bébé. However, her real strengths lie not in combat prowess but in her unwavering determination, her emotional intuition, and her sheer stubbornness. She lacks the power to directly intervene in battles against Mega Evolved or Primal Pokémon, but her courage and quick thinking in non-combat situations, such as rescuing Alain from the frozen battlefield, prove to be her most valuable assets. Her ability to form strong emotional bonds is her greatest strength as a Trainer.
