Description
Mitsuki Nase is a second-year high school student and the president of her school's literary club. She comes from the prestigious Nase family, a lineage of Spirit World Warriors who protect the human world from supernatural beings known as youmu. Within the Nase household, she is the youngest sister of Hiroomi Nase and also has a sister named Izumi Nase. Her upbringing was strict, as she was raised with the belief that Spirit World Warriors must remain isolated and focused on their duties, which resulted in her missing out on many typical peer experiences.
Mitsuki's outward personality is marked by a direct and sometimes abrasive way of speaking that can give the impression of a sadistic nature. However, this bluntness often masks a genuine sense of compassion and concern for those she cares about, particularly Akihito Kanbara. She initially spends time with Akihito under the pretext of observing him—he is a half-youmu, half-human being—but she is deeply worried about his well-being and looks out for him in her own sharp-tongued manner. Her dry sense of humor frequently surfaces in serious situations, adding a layer of complexity to her character.
Her motivations are closely tied to her protective instincts. She wants to understand Akihito's unique abilities and ensure his safety, often putting herself in harm's way to support him. Mitsuki also grapples with the weight of her family's expectations and the solitary path of a Spirit World Warrior, yet she gradually becomes more willing to form emotional bonds and rely on others.
In the story, Mitsuki primarily handles logistical support for the Spirit World Warriors rather than frontline combat, but she is a capable fighter nonetheless. She possesses enhanced athletic ability, agility, and combat skills, and she can wield various weapons. Her Nase lineage grants her access to powerful blood-based techniques that allow her to manipulate her own life force for improved performance in battle. However, her powers have limitations tied to her emotional state and physical endurance, and they evolve as she gains a deeper understanding of herself and her responsibilities.
Her key relationships include her bond with Akihito Kanbara, which deepens from that of a detached observer to a loyal friend and ally. She is also close with her brother Hiroomi, whose contrasting personality often highlights her own traits. These connections are central to her character development, as she moves from a duty-driven warrior to someone who embraces emotional involvement.
In the film Beyond the Boundary: I'll Be Here - Future, set one year after the events of the television series, Mitsuki continues to act as a Spirit World Warrior. When Akihito decides to help Mirai Kuriyama from inside the realm of Beyond the Boundary, Mitsuki joins Izumi, Hiroomi, and others in slaying the youmu that are dragged out by that realm's influence. Her role in this climactic fight underscores her bravery and her commitment to protecting those she cares about. Throughout the series, she grows from a seemingly cold observer into a emotionally engaged protector, finding a balance between her duty and her humanity.
