Description
Mirai Kuriyama is a first-year high school student and a Spirit World Warrior who comes from a bloodline of warriors with the rare and heretical ability to manipulate their own blood. She is the sole survivor of her clan, a fact that has left her isolated and living in poverty, as her abilities are regarded with suspicion and disdain among other Spirit World Warrior clans. She wears a pair of thick, round, red-rimmed glasses and a pink cardigan, which conceals a bandaged wound on her arm that she uses to access her blood for combat. Her catchphrase, uttered when she is flustered or irritated, is "I'm displeased."
Mirai's personality is characterized by her introverted, clumsy, and socially awkward nature. She tends to blend into the background at school and struggles with everyday life, partly because her fear of the supernatural creatures known as youmu initially prevents her from earning a living as a warrior. She is deeply caring and yearns for acceptance and companionship, but her past trauma and the stigma attached to her powers have made her withdrawn. She is also poor at lying and has a habit of cleaning her glasses when attempting to deceive someone. Despite her reserved demeanor, she is persistent when determined and dislikes being ridiculed.
Her primary motivation is to overcome her fear of youmu and find a way to live a more fulfilling life. This drive is rooted in her tragic past: her clan was destroyed, and she was later forced to kill her closest friend, Yui Inami, after Yui was possessed by a powerful youmu known as the Hollow Shadow. This event left her burdened with deep regret and guilt. She was initially brought to Nagatsuki City by Izumi Nase, the head of the Nase family, who believed that Mirai's abilities might be strong enough to eliminate Akihito Kanbara, a half-youmu harboring an ultra-powerful youmu called the Beyond the Boundary.
Mirai's central role in the story is as the main heroine. Her journey is defined by her relationship with Akihito Kanbara, whom she first encounters on the school rooftop. After impulsively stabbing him with a blood sword and discovering his immortality, she continues to attack him as practice, which gradually leads to a genuine friendship. Akihito becomes her emotional anchor, helping her confront her fears and gain confidence. Her bond with him deepens into romantic love, and in the climactic events of the series, she sacrifices herself to defeat the Beyond the Boundary and protect him. In the film Beyond the Boundary: I'll Be Here - Future, the two reaffirm their commitment to each other and confess their mutual feelings.
Key relationships also include Sakura Inami, Yui's younger sister, who initially seeks revenge against Mirai for Yui's death but later becomes her friend and roommate after recognizing her sincerity. Mirai also develops a friendship with Mitsuki Nase, a member of the Literary Club who initially regards her with caution but gradually becomes a close confidante. The support she receives from Akihito, Mitsuki, and Hiroomi Nase helps her emerge from her isolation and find a sense of belonging.
Throughout the series, Mirai undergoes significant development, evolving from a lonely, guilt-ridden girl into a courageous and capable warrior. She gradually gains mastery over her abilities and learns to trust others, culminating in her ultimate act of self-sacrifice and her eventual reunion with Akihito.
Mirai's primary ability is hemokinesis, the power to manipulate her own blood. She most commonly shapes and solidifies it into weapons, such as swords or shields, and can also spray it as a corrosive substance that burns or dissolves enemies. Her blood manipulation is limited by her natural blood volume, preventing her from creating constructs larger than herself. In combat, she demonstrates refined swordsmanship and enhanced agility, reflexes, and mobility. In the film Beyond the Boundary: I'll Be Here - Future, she is possessed by a youmu, which grants her a darker form with increased power, including the ability to generate shadow tendrils and manipulate fire, though this transformation causes her severe pain.
