Description
Wataru was an ordinary man before the global amnesia event erased his past. When the memory-destroying wind swept Earth, he regressed to a feral state, losing all knowledge and language. Surviving by scavenging, he acted on violent instinct, stealing food from the weak. A glimpse of his reflection sparked his first moment of self-awareness and a flicker of conscience.

His path shifted at a Montana military research facility where he met Johnny. Unaffected by amnesia due to experimental enhancements, Johnny recognized Wataru's physical potential. Over months, Johnny drilled him in language, reason, survival, and basic mechanics, including vehicle operation. He named the man "Wataru," meaning "to travel" or "cross over." Dying from experiment complications, Johnny tasked Wataru with exploring the world to observe humanity's condition and find others willing to rebuild.

Traveling alone, Wataru entered San Francisco and faced a hostile law enforcement mech. The mysterious Sophia intervened, telepathically guiding him to destroy it. Agreeing to take her to New York City, they journeyed together. Across America, Wataru displayed combat skill and marksmanship, often battling rogue machinery. Key encounters shaped him: in Los Angeles, he saved Sue from human sacrifice to a construction mech deity, though her choice to return revealed cultural complexities. In Eternal Town, he rejected the supercomputer's offer of programmed contentment, arguing for free will and unsuccessfully urging resident Lisa to leave.

Wataru and Sophia debated humanity's nature and intervention ethics. Sophia eventually revealed her alien origins and connection to the amnesia wind. She proposed a wager: if Wataru convinced another person to join them, her race might restore human memories. This remained pending. Pursuit by a relentless, self-repairing police mech culminated in New York City, where Wataru independently confronted and shattered it. Sophia then departed to plead humanity's case to her species. Wataru physically resembles a younger Rambo, his appearance suited to the wasteland.
