Description
Charles Grey is a character who serves as one of Queen Victoria's private secretarial officers and butlers, operating alongside his counterpart Charles Phipps under the collective designation of the "Double Charles." He holds the noble title of Earl, and his family is notably famous, with the tea variety Earl Grey being named after them. Standing at approximately 170 centimeters tall, he was born in the year 1865, making him 24 years old during the series' events.

In terms of appearance, Charles Grey is a young man with a slender build and a rather boyish face. He has choppy, uneven silver-white hair, with most strands reaching his chin, though several locks at the back extend down to the middle of his back. His eyes are also silver in color. His attire primarily consists of a white swallow-tail coat, which he typically leaves unfastened, over a dark, lace-embellished button-down shirt. He completes this uniform with white trousers, knee-high boots with spats, black gloves, and a golden caged rapier worn on his right hip.

Personality-wise, Charles Grey is characterized as a bold, energetic, and exceptionally self-assured individual. His most defining trait is a powerful competitive streak and a deep-seated hatred of losing, even when it concerns a simple game. He has admitted to finding joy in tormenting opponents who are unable to resist his attacks. This aggressive and somewhat arrogant nature is balanced by a sharp, astute intelligence. He is highly observant and is often the first to voice suspicions regarding mysterious circumstances, such as the unnaturally swift movements of Ciel Phantomhive and his butler, Sebastian Michaelis. Despite his often juvenile and boisterous demeanor, Grey is remarkably loyal to Queen Victoria and carries out his assigned duties, no matter how ruthless, without hesitation.

Despite his confidence, Grey harbors several notable fears. He is terrified of ghosts, stating that he only believes in things he can physically cut with his sword. He is also known to be afraid of snakes. Adding to his list of eccentricities, Grey possesses a truly voracious appetite. He is known to consume massive quantities of food, once emptying an entire bucket of curry prepared as a dinner because he felt a "little hungry" and later devouring several days' worth of food supplies at the Phantomhive manor. He is also a capable heavyweight drinker, able to consume large amounts of alcohol without apparent effect.

Charles Grey's background reveals that he is a recent inheritor of his earldom, and his grandfather notably served as a Prime Minister. He, along with Charles Phipps, is a graduate of Weston College, specifically from the Green Lion Dormitory. In his younger years, he observed a fencing match involving Elizabeth Midford, whom he recognized as a genius with a sword, correcting a companion who assumed the skilled fencer was the son of the Marquess of Midford.

In the story, Grey's role is primarily as an agent of the Queen, sent to observe, deliver messages, and enforce her will. He is first seen watching from a distance as Ciel Phantomhive's mission concluded. He later arrives at the Phantomhive manor to deliver the Queen's message, forcing entry by cutting down the kitchen door. There, he effortlessly engages and defeats the servants Mey-Rin and Baldroy, demonstrating his superior combat skills by dodging bullets and slicing Mey-Rin's pistols in half. As the supervising officer at a banquet held to entertain a German banker named Georg von Siemens, Grey's role takes a darker turn. It is revealed that he killed Georg von Siemens on the Queen's orders to cripple German military advancement and to frame Ciel as punishment for a previous, unsatisfactory mission. Grey manipulated the drunken banker into faking his own death, then actually murdered him. He also killed Sebastian Michaelis to eliminate a witness, though Sebastian, being a demon, survived the attack. When his attempt to frame Ciel failed, Grey killed another guest, Karl Woodley, in frustration.

The Queen also dispatches Grey and Phipps to investigate the suspicious activities aboard the luxury liner Campania, as depicted in the Book of the Atlantic arc. Furthermore, a flashback places him watching Elizabeth Midford compete in a fencing match, showcasing his long-standing awareness of her prowess.

Grey's primary relationship is with his colleague, Charles Phipps. The two work together seamlessly as the "Double Charles," regularly undertaking joint missions for the Queen. While Phipps is more calm and taciturn, Grey is the more outspoken and suspicious of the pair, often pointing out inconsistencies that his partner dismisses. Grey's relationship with Ciel Phantomhive is antagonistic. He secretly looks down on the young Earl, referring to him derogatorily, and enjoys attempting to outmaneuver or bully him. This animosity extends to Sebastian, whose abilities Grey finds both impressive and irritatingly obstructive.

In terms of abilities, Charles Grey is an extraordinarily skilled swordsman. He is left-handed and his speed and technique are such that he is considered to rival Sebastian's physical prowess when the demon is in a human-like state. His combat style is aggressive and fluid, allowing him to overwhelm highly trained opponents with ease. He possesses keen senses and is very perceptive, enabling him to detect details that others might miss. Throughout the series, Grey demonstrates a capacity for cold-blooded execution of his orders, yet he also displays moments of childish petulance, particularly when his schemes are foiled or his pride is wounded. Despite his high standing and noble name, his arrogance and ruthlessness are tempered by the small but endearing quirks of his gluttony and his irrational fears.
