Karim Flam is a lieutenant in Special Fire Force Company 1 and a priest within the Holy Sol Temple. A Second Generation pyrokinetic, he generates and manipulates ice via thermoacoustic refrigeration. This process collects external heat energy, converts it into sound using specialized instruments, and cycles the energy repeatedly to drastically lower temperatures, forming ice. His musical instruments, like a trumpet or bell, act as conduits, significantly amplifying the effect—a mechanism he compares to air conditioning systems. His precise control allows creating air pockets within ice for trapped individuals to breathe and rapidly freezing large-scale threats like Firestorms. He strategically uses his bell to create alarming noises aiding heat reduction and collection.
He stands 178.5 cm tall with a muscular build. His appearance features short, straight dark grey hair brushed forward, shaved sides revealing darker hair underneath, and small, dark eyes often conveying an irritated or lazy expression. His standard attire, shared among Company 1's commanders instead of bunker gear, consists of a dark cassock topped with a light overcoat with a high collar and a skirt-like garment, dark shoes, and a pendant with a cross-like symbol. He is frequently seen wearing headphones and carries musical instruments into combat.
Personality-wise, Karim exhibits a serious, cautious, and brash demeanor, showing immediate distrust toward strangers and readily insulting those he dislikes. He habitually repeats words or phrases within the same sentence, causing communication difficulties. He becomes annoyed quickly, even with comrades, and disapproves of playfulness during combat. Despite this, he strictly adheres to Company 1’s protocols and demonstrates deep respect for colleagues. He values loyalty and friendship intensely, particularly with Rekka Hoshimiya and Foien Li, but prioritizes justice over personal bonds—willing to confront friends if necessary. He possesses strong leadership skills, formulating effective tactical plans under pressure. Following Rekka’s betrayal and death, he experiences profound guilt and self-loathing, believing he failed their friendship and inadvertently caused Rekka’s downward spiral. This fuels his relentless pursuit of the Evangelist’s truth.
His story involvement begins during the confrontation between Company 5 and Company 8. He participates in training recruits at Company 1’s cathedral, demonstrating his ice ability to neutralize a stray attack. While leading a mission in Shinjuku District to suppress an Infernal, Shinra Kusakabe witnesses Karim and Rekka at the scene of an artificially induced human combustion incident, raising suspicions. Later, discovering Shinra and Arthur Boyle snooping in his quarters, Karim reveals Rekka is the true culprit behind Infernal creation using "Bugs." He asserts Company 1’s responsibility to handle Rekka but acknowledges he cannot restrict non-subordinates like Shinra and Arthur from intervening.
Tracking Rekka with Foien Li, Karim arrives during Rekka’s fight against Shinra and Tamaki Kotatsu. He immobilizes Rekka in ice to prevent further violence, but Arrow assassinates Rekka with a projectile. A subsequent arrow targets Karim, but Foien sacrifices his forearm to save him. Karim then orchestrates a counter-sniper strategy: directing Shinra to create smoke cover, ordering Tamaki to deploy her Nekomata flames as a distraction, and freezing those flames to provide additional concealment—successfully repelling the attackers.
Seeking answers about Rekka’s motives and the Evangelist, Karim allies with Company 8. He attends a high-level meeting with Emperor Raffles III regarding Adolla Burst and combustion phenomena, afterward formally proposing collaboration with Company 8 Captain Akitaru Ōbi. He later visits Company 8 alongside Hibana and Konro Sagamiya to share intelligence, disclosing Rekka’s use of Bugs to find individuals compatible with Adolla. During this meeting, he critiques Company 8’s rookie combat capabilities.
After Leonard Burns’s apparent death during the Ōbi’s Rescue arc, Karim expresses skepticism about the official narrative painting Company 8 as villains, confiding in Foien Li that Burns aimed to spark change. To understand Rekka’s actions, doppelgängers, and White-Clad motives, Karim and Li investigate St. Raffles Convent. They bypass security, join Hibana, and discover an underground passage to a hidden research lab. There, they find evidence linking the convent to doppelgänger experiments, botany, and insect samples. Hibana reveals the sisters, including Iris, were fed Fire Bug-infused food to create doppelgängers and pyrokinetics. Sister Sumire emerges, destroys Karim’s instrument, and attacks him with vibration-based abilities inducing chest trauma. Sumire summons Infernalised children, forcing Karim and Li into a desperate retreat aided by Kishiri and an unseen Adolla-linked intervention.
Three months later, Karim deduces connections between the stone pillars found in Sumire’s lab and replica structures, committing to combat increasingly dangerous Infernals alongside allies like Onyango. He continues prioritizing investigating the Evangelist and the pillars’ significance.
