Movie
Description
Komatsu is a human male chef affiliated with Hotel Gourmet and the International Gourmet Organization (IGO). He serves as head chef at Hotel Gourmet and later becomes the official combo partner of Toriko, one of the Four Heavenly Kings. His physical appearance features short black hair, large black eyes, and initially a wide nose with large nostrils; this nose undergoes temporary alteration after an encounter with the Gourmet Corp but later reverts. He stands 155 cm tall and typically wears khaki outfits during expeditions or a white chef uniform while working.
Personality-wise, Komatsu exhibits a timid and emotionally expressive demeanor, crying easily in stressful or joyful situations. Despite this, he demonstrates significant bravery when pursuing culinary goals or protecting others. He shows deep compassion, comforting Coco despite the latter's poisonous body and reassuring Melk the Second about her craftsmanship. Driven by humility and dedication to cooking, he seeks rare ingredients in dangerous environments alongside Toriko. His courage grows over time, leading him to confront formidable foes like Starjun to reclaim his knife or challenge Zebra's ethics.
As a chef, Komatsu possesses exceptional culinary skills, including the ability to "hear the voice of ingredients," which allows him to identify edible organisms and optimize preparation methods. He successfully recreates the legendary Century Soup using saliva from his pet Wall Penguin, Yun, and declines to patent it to protect the species. His expertise impresses figures like Setsuno (a national treasure), IGO President Ichiryu, and Gourmet Corp's Starjun. He earns global recognition, ranking 88th among the world's top 100 chefs after simplifying "Medical Cooking Mochi" preparation.
Komatsu partners with Toriko to complete a Full Course Menu, featuring ingredients like Century Soup (soup course), GOD (main course), and AIR (salad). He accompanies Toriko on numerous expeditions, including to the Gourmet World, where he refines his abilities post-timeskip. His background includes early appearances in pilot manga one-shots (2002 and 2007), where story elements inspired the Galala Gator Arc. In spin-offs like *Toriko: Gourmet Academy*, a younger Komatsu attends culinary school as a timid student befriending Toriko. Video games (*Gourmet Survival*, *Gourmet Monsters*) depict him assisting in ingredient hunts.
In *Toriko 3D: Kaimaku! Gourmet Adventure!!*, Komatsu appears in a post-credits scene, approaching Toriko to commission the capture of the Galala Gator. This occurs after the film's main events, positioning the movie as a prequel to their partnership. The scene directly leads into the Galala Gator Arc, where Komatsu formally hires Toriko and joins his first expedition.
His development across media shows progression from a fearful novice to a resilient chef capable of surviving Gourmet World's hazards. He maintains a pet baby Wall Penguin named Yun, essential for Century Soup, and values familial bonds with it. His relationships with all Four Heavenly Kings are notably amicable, with three expressing interest in forming combos with him.
