Description
Drayden holds three key roles in Opelucid City, Unova: Gym Leader specializing in Dragon-type Pokémon, mayor, and principal of the prestigious Opelucid Academy. He presents as tall and muscular with white hair and a unique beard covering his mouth, resembling a reptile's lower jaw. His attire typically includes a white shirt with rolled sleeves, gray pants secured by purple suspenders featuring spiked shoulder pads, black gloves, black shoes, and a green gem on his shirt collar.

Known for his calm, wise demeanor, especially in battle, Drayden deeply values structured education. However, he acknowledges its limitations, advocating experiential learning through travel when needed. This belief shapes his mentorship of Iris, a young trainer from the Village of Dragons. Witnessing her instinctive battling style during a village tournament, he later accepts her into his academy but observes her struggle with academic rigor. When Iris loses a battle by failing to recognize her Fraxure's exhaustion, Drayden stresses understanding a Pokémon's condition. Concluding her potential requires broader experiences, he recommends her journey to the village elder, foreseeing her as a future Gym Leader successor.

Later, Drayden reappears to test Iris's growth in an official Gym battle. His Haxorus clashes with her Excadrill in a mutual knockout after Drill Run meets Giga Impact. His Druddigon then defeats her Dragonite using Dragon Tail, despite Dragonite opting to fight grounded. Though victorious, Drayden acknowledges Iris's significant development and the value of the friendships she forged, reaffirming his decision to send her on her journey and encouraging her continued growth.

In subsequent events, Drayden provides the Opelucid Gym for Iris's World Coronation Series battle against Ash, revealing she has become the Unova Champion. He later watches her compete against Cynthia in the Masters Eight Tournament, accompanied by his Axew.

Drayden's known Pokémon include a Haxorus utilizing moves like Rock Smash and Giga Impact. His battle style emphasizes tactical precision, demonstrated when Haxorus exploited close-range vulnerabilities to defeat Iris's Excadrill in their first encounter. His Druddigon shows notable resilience, enduring supereffective attacks like Ice Beam while using Dragon Tail decisively. He also possesses an Axew that observes battles alongside him, with no documented moves.
