Description
Kaname Chris, later known as Kaname Amamiya, is a central character introduced in the second half of the anime Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream. When she first appears, she is a 12-year-old girl with a mysterious and whimsical aura, often seen with her black hair styled into short twin-tails and possessing vivid purple eyes. Her age progresses to 15 by the events of the following series, Pretty Rhythm Dear My Future.
Her personality is a unique blend of childlike innocence, startling directness, and profound wisdom. Kaname is incredibly straightforward, expressing whatever she feels without hesitation. She often refers to herself in the third person and has a variety of quirky, physical ways of interacting with people she wants to understand, such as touching their hearts, smelling them, or even licking them. This behavior stems from a genuine and unfiltered curiosity about the world and the people around her. Underneath this air-headed exterior lies a sharp intuition and an impressive, quiet intelligence. One of her most defining and recurring quirks is her immense love for bananas, which leads to numerous banana-related gags throughout the series. Complementing this is her outstanding physical ability; she can climb tall trees with ease, a skill that once earned her the playful nickname gorilla child among fans. This agility is a remnant of her early childhood, having been raised in a circus troupe in Russia.
Kaname's backstory is central to her motivations. She was an orphan who was taken in by the legendary Prism Star Sonata Kanzaki when she was very young and starving. Sonata gave her a banana, new clothes, tied her hair, taught her the circus arts, and eventually became her adoptive mother and coach. Sonata also gave Kaname her name and allowed her to call her Mama, forging an incredibly deep and loyal bond between them. This relationship is a primary driver for Kaname, who is willing to do anything for her mother. Her initial role in the story is as an enigmatic figure who takes a strong liking to the main protagonist, Aira Harune, after meeting her at an amusement park. She quickly becomes close with Aira and her friends, Rizumu Amamiya and Mion Takamine, but her alliance is called into question when it is revealed she was working with her mother, Sonata, who had been estranged from her own daughter, Rizumu. This creates significant tension, as Kaname's presence and her casual use of Mama for Sonata deeply shock Rizumu, leading to a period of conflict. Ultimately, Kaname's loyalty is to bring her adoptive mother happiness, which she achieves by helping to mend the rift between Sonata and Rizumu.
In terms of abilities, Kaname is a prodigy. She possesses a remarkable skill that allows her to perfectly replicate any Prism Jump or dance routine after seeing it only once. When she uses this copy ability, her eyes take on a distant, cosmic appearance, as if her focus has shifted to an internal replay mode. Using this power, she was able to flawlessly perform the complex routines of the top unit, MARs. In a solo performance, she stunned onlookers by dancing a routine identical to one her mother, Sonata, had performed. Furthermore, despite its difficulty, she was able to execute a dark, incomplete version of the legendary Aurora Rising jump, showcasing her immense latent potential and the training she received from Sonata. In the sequel, her performance style includes signature Prism Jumps like Fresh Fruits Basket and a variation of Stardust Shower Perfect.
Her key relationships evolve significantly. Her immediate and intense affection for Aira Harune is a constant source of humor and warmth, as she often runs to leap into Aira's arms. Her relationship with Rizumu starts with rivalry and confusion but eventually transforms into a genuine sisterly bond. By the end of Aurora Dream, she is officially adopted into the Amamiya family, taking the name Kaname Amamiya and becoming Rizumu's adoptive sister. She also forms a close professional partnership with Serena Jounouchi and Kanon Toudou, forming the unit Serenon with K. Kaname's development arc takes her from a mysterious, rootless girl working to fulfill her mother's wishes to an integral part of a loving family and a supportive senior figure to younger Prism Stars in Dear My Future. By the end of the sequel, she embarks on a journey to find her biological parents, a future she had envisioned for herself. Physically, her appearance matures in the sequel; her twin-tails grow longer, and she begins wearing glasses, which are typically removed during Prism Shows, suggesting they may be a fashion accessory rather than a necessity.
