Description
Sophia Cherbourg lives with her parents, Bernard and Rosary, above their bookshop in a French village. She dreams of becoming Europe's finest pastry chef, starting with limited knowledge but immense eagerness to learn.
Her life transforms when fourteen rabbit-like beings, the Sugarbunnies, materialize from Bunniesfield. Sent by their Two Queens on a mission, they enter her home via the chimney, initially disguising themselves as plush toys. They reveal themselves alive, speaking to comfort Sophia after learning her close friend Mireille Darie is moving to Paris. Sophia befriends them and agrees to secretly shelter them, hiding their existence from everyone, including her parents.
The Sugarbunnies, especially the pastry-specialist twins Shirousa and Kurousa, begin teaching Sophia baking. She meets and learns from all fourteen, each an expert in different fields like gelato, flower arranging, jam, coffee, bread, and glassblowing. Despite Sophia's efforts at secrecy, the Sugarbunnies' true nature is eventually revealed to the entire town, including her parents and friends like the wealthy Francoise Dupont, cyclist barista Pierre Jeunet, and ballet student Charlotte Ferrer.
Sophia maintains strong community friendships. Her bond with Mireille remains vital despite the distance to Paris. Demonstrating kindness and resourcefulness, she crafts a custom plushie resembling the Sugarbunny Momousa to appease Francoise Dupont's dog Catherine after the dog claimed the real Momousa. Sophia and the Sugarbunnies collaborate, creating various foods and sweets that enrich village life. Her journey involves continuous learning in pastry arts, supported by the Sugarbunnies and her human friends who share her passion.
