Description
Mokona Modoki refers to two distinct rabbit-like creatures created by Yūko Ichihara and Clow Reed, replicating the original Mokona from Cephiro. Designed to facilitate interdimensional communication and aid in retrieving Princess Sakura's scattered memory feathers, they are named Larg (Black Mokona) and Soel (White Mokona). Larg primarily resides with Yūko and later Kimihiro Watanuki, while Soel accompanies the interdimensional travel group led by Syaoran.
Both possess circular gems on their foreheads and earrings reflecting their core powers. Black Larg features a blue gem and earring, enabling the sealing of magical power and memories, including Sakura's memories of Syaoran and Watanuki's past. White Soel displays a red gem and earring, allowing the amplification of magic. Larg exhibits a calmer demeanor and enjoys salty foods, while Soel is more energetic and prefers sweets. Both share a fondness for sake, singing, celebratory gatherings, and celebrate their birthday on February 14.
Their abilities encompass 108 "secret techniques," including dimensional travel (exclusive to Soel), teleporting objects between each other by swallowing and regurgitating them, translating languages, sensing Sakura's feathers (triggering a "mekkyon" reaction), clairvoyance, ghost detection (exclusive to Larg), and immunity to misfortune. Larg can also devour and compress spirits.
In *Tokyo Revelations*, Soel plays a critical role. When Fai D. Flowright is gravely injured, Soel contacts Yūko via Larg to seek help. This intervention facilitates Kurogane's wish to save Fai's life, granted through a vampire transformation. Mokona also enables the teleportation of essential items, like the feather left to protect Tokyo's inhabitants, relaying it through Larg.
Function and affection define Mokona's relationships. Soel maintains a close bond with Sakura and serves as a communication bridge between the travelers and Yūko via Larg. Larg acts as a companion and "drinking buddy" to Yūko and later Watanuki, though its teasing nature contrasts with Watanuki's temperament. After Yūko's death, Larg remains at her shop with Watanuki, Maru, and Moro, its dynamic with Watanuki largely unchanged.
Their names derive from runes: "Sôwilô" (sun) for Soel and "Laguz" (water) for Larg. The designation "Modoki" (meaning "pseudo" or "imitation") acknowledges their status as replicas. Their origins and adventures are detailed in the spin-off book *Soel to Larg: Mokona=Modoki no Bouken*.
